Love the flimsy logic of "just have them visit a church & synagogue too," as if there aren't dozens different churches and dozens of other faiths. Let's just have them visit them all so we can justify forcing Islam into the classroom, instead of just upholding separation of church and state as is. Might be the dumbest person that I've seen in a while.

I know Extra Credits wants to be as non bias as possible when it comes to world history, and it was interesting to see a very colorized, fluff piece point of view from an Ottoman Emperor but holy shit they picked the worst guy to actually cover and as much as I personally enjoy reading the history of the Ottoman Empire (WW1 and the Eastern Question!), it's very fair to say that they were far from a very peaceful society.

Suleiman the Magnificent was a cruel piece of shit, he mutilated his prisoners, was extremely cruel to the Hungarians, basically destroyed his own family dynasty by killing off his own sons rather than see them inherit the throne and killed his own best friend based on paranoia. He was also a barbarian asshole thirsty for conquest all for the sake of glory. This guy was a paranoid madman, a CK2 player personified, and would make any Game of Thrones character look like Nick Jr, well Ottoman Empire history makes GOT looks child's play.

Sounds pretty typical of a ruler of his era, and not much different from other Ottoman sultans. The Ottomans were paranoid about repeating succession crises that almost destroyed them in the early 15th century. Killing your family had a long tradition in polygamist monarchies (Islamic, pre-Islamic, Chinese, etc.) because with dozens of princes there will inevitably be some problems. Why judge him by present standards on human rights? While calling Muhammad a violent pedophile is warranted since his followers believe he is a perfect human being whose lifestyle should still be followed, nobody thinks the same about Suleiman the Magnificent or any other historical figure who gets judged by today's standards (like Andrew Jackson and anyone else who owned slaves in the US).

Before 9/11, Western conservatives were pretty pro-Muslim. Le Pen's party courted Arabs in France, Muslims overwhelmingly voted republican in America, and dinesh d'souza wrote a book defending Islam from 'militant atheists.'

I wonder if things will go back that way? On paper, conservative Christians and conservative Muslims agree on most issues, so it's not out of the question. Especially with the current obsession people have with Marxism and socialism - something both Western and Eastern conservatives despise.

If that happens, I can definitely see the left turning against practicing Muslims pretty hard.
