That's not what I find hard to understand. I believe it. He's cheap, desperate (but won't admit it) and writes faster than he can think, which results in works of chicken scratch. What I find odd is why they picked him considering his online behavior. Even before Disney, he was a pretentious sack of shit who spent every waking moment letting everyone know when he made a fart or when someone at a line at Starbucks looked at him funny. Plus, he's never been one to take criticism well. So why pick someone clearly as troublesome and prone to badmouthing as him that does nothing but fuck up public relations? Is it because he had a "strong" and trendy online presence that was the real reason for his popularity rather than popularity for his books? There were probably dozens of other equally (or less) talented, and equally cheap (if not cheaper) and far more desperate amateurs than him fresh out of school who may manage to have an online presence without coming off as total nuts and they wouldn't even have to be fans of SW, but they would at least not act like total spergs and negatively affect PR. Did those in charge at Disney not realize the kind of influence Twitter tends to have or did they even know it existed until the whole Gunn controversy?
