I love how all these idiots seem to have self diagnosed mental issues.

It's kind of the smartest move they ever pulled. The reasoning behind it is retarded, but it works. To them, it's like gay people "taking back" the word faggot, women the word bitch or black people the word nigger. Having mental illnesses makes you heroic and admirable on Tumblr. If you vocally identify as a wolf, a dragon or the fucking ocean, everyone is going to call you retarded. They will assume (correctly) that you must be either mentally ill, a giant attention whore, or both. So they diagnose themselves, before someone else can. And use it as a shield.

It's really ironic if you think about it. They really are mentally ill on some level. All of Tumblr has Münchausen syndrome.

Is this possibly one and the same condition as other phenomena such as adult babies? Or FemaleHygiene guy? What is the difference between otherkin and furries? Is it just that 'otherkin' encompasses inanimate objects or abstract concepts as well as animals?

Otherkin seems like the 'fad' right now for lonely internet people, along with relentlessly defining oneself with an endless permutation of labels - but it doesn't seem to be very different from the old days of furries and babyfurs, etc.

It's as if by preempting the accusation of mental retardation they open up the field for unlimited free-range sperging where it was previously impossible. It's like staring into infinity.

Otherkin have been documented going as far back as the 90's at least; some sources place them gaining traction around the 70's. This recent mutation of otherkin going beyond animals, mythical beasts and fictional characters is all quite new and blew up over the past four years, as far as I can tell.

The difference between furries and otherkin is that furries like to pretend that they're animal people, and know full well it's pretend and that they are giant nerds. Otherkin have convinced themselves that they really are animals and faires and dragons and whatever, whether spiritually or literally. This ditinction has become more clear as the fandom got older. It used to be way fuzzier.

I always make sure to let people know my perceived gender, my current sexual orientation and my entire medical history before talking about, you know, actual stuff that might be relevant or interesting...

Christ on a bike, whatever happened to liking stuff?

There was a site I used to go on because a friend directed me to some wacky otherkin folk on there. These two are some of the gems I have screencapped.

I'll check later to see if I still have some other gems.

The 70's? Goddamnit.

If there's one thing I've learned this year from my Mass Media class about social stereotyping, a lot of - if not majority or even all - the movement to have these minorities all recognized in society stems from some extremely radical feminist movement that dates back to that specific decade in one way or another. Naturally, this has more to do with SJW bullshit than anything, but this whole "otherkin" thing falls in line with the mold-breaking behaviors I'm starting to see prevalent from things in that period.

Yeah, the 70's. Apparently otherkin was the bastard child of new age philosophy and Renaissance faire nerds. I remember coming across an otherkin site in 1998, full of people who claimed to be actual werewolves.

The meditation bit reminded me of when my mother tried to use meditation to get me to not be such a fuck up. I do remember that I saw "visions" of like, a low-flying phoenix, and I took it to mean that I was to die and be reborn again as not a total fuck up. Trippy stuff.

I was also like, 12 or 13 when this happened.

I'm calling troll. The whole "I came out to my parents and got kicked out so now I'm living with the other person on the blog" seems too contrived.
There's some 14 year old on Tumblr who identifies as the ocean.

The entire ocean.

I can't find her Tumblr right now, though, but I'll post it when I do.
What does she think of Mako Tsunami?

Probably a creep, what kind of guy marries an ocean?

Otherkin don't really bother me all that much. I just figure that hey, whatever floats their boat. If they don't bug me I don't bug them.

But Fictionkin... actually believing you're a fictional character is beyond stupid. That character is not actually real. They are the intellectual property of someone. You can't be something some person wrote. The character doesn't have a soul or thoughts or feelings of their own, every aspect of them is controlled by whoever wrote them. Seriously, what the actual fuck gives them the idea that they are actually a character from their favorite anime or whatever.

My favorite thing is when fictionkin insist that the writers got their character wrong.

That is the most hilarious shit ever.

THE CHARACTER YOU CAME UP WITH DOESN'T CONFORM TO MY FANFICTION PERSONA BAAAAWWWWWW

I have an ex that now claims to be 'Deity-kin'...he says he is the mortal incarnation of Anubis (Egyptian death God) who has been sent to Earth to live a mortal life so that he could better understand the responsibility of weighing human souls in the afterlife or some shit.
