I really liked this. I mean, the kid got inspired to go on quests by great tales of comraderie and adventure and he sort of takes to heart what the experienced guys told him, to fight valiantly for his comrades and to not leave anyone behind... but the thing at the end, namely that survival depends on the group's ability to work together and the implied experience that comes with it seems to have been lost on him - and that ultimately seals his (and his party's) doom.
Yes exactly. I also quite like that the flow of that flashback corresponds with the current events to drive home just how out of his depth they are - like the line "I'm a good fighter" being immediately followed by him committing the rookie mistake that ultimately gets him killed.

And it all seems to be done in the service of putting all the classic fantasy anime/jrpg cliches in a very harsh light. Seems the author knows that the main people who will be reading this series will have seen these set ups a million times before: a group of underdog rookies who fly by the seat of their pants pretty much every adventure but don't ever seem to learn from their mistakes, who get by more on plot armor and friendship than any discernible skills or wits, and where it's often mentioned that monsters have or like to kidnap/rape women but the most that will ever come out of it is some fan service-y panty shots before the female characters go on their merry way. Everything in the opening seems like it's designed to drive home that none of those cliches are going to fly in the world of Goblin Slayer, and gets rid of the appearance of plot armor by driving home that there are very real consequences to fucking up and the characters either gotta Git Gud or suffer said consequences. That's my take away from it at least.

With all that considered, it's almost a shame that Goblin Slayer kind of blows its load so early with this opening arc. While the titular character is definitely more rounded compared to other series - there's effort made to show that he's clever and strategic rather than just swinging blindly, with several quirks stemming from him being poorly socialized that give GS an odd charm - but after a while it kinda feels like the author realized he'd eventually hit a wall if entire plot was "he slays goblins" and nothing else. It seems like he tries to spice it up by creating a set-up where there's a bigger, more classic fantasy genre plot looming on the horizon that GS doesn't give two shits about since he's so singularly driven, but it doesn't really work considering GS's motives for being this way frankly aren't strong enough to carry the plot. With Berserk we spend several hundred chapters watching Guts get run through a meat grinder 3 times over, so by the time we get to the point in his life where he's demon hunting it makes perfect sense as to why he's so driven to do what he does to the point of near cruelty. Goblin Slayer doesn't really have that, and the current supporting cast so far hasn't impressed me, so it doesn't feel like the characters are really strong enough to carry the show on top of the occasional tonal whiplash.

I couldn't help myself and feel that there is some very cynical humour in the first chapter/episode.

Warrior: "I wanna fight some dragons or demons already!"

SpongeBob time card: "Few pages later"

Warrior: (gets turned into hamburger meat by the world's lowest tier enemies)

I watched the first episode and people are fucking over reacting. I don't know, maybe I'm kind of inured to it, but its all basically implied. Yeah, they rip her clothes off and are definitely rape her, but its far from graphic. Shit, movies have far more visceral and explicit rape scenes. Why did the rape have to happen? To show that goblins are degenerate, to show what they do to women they capture. Its a more visceral response.

I was like, 'People are getting their panties in a twist over this? Holy fuck. People have gotten weak.'

You have to establish how scum these goblins are to justify their brutal murder. But people these days are fucking pussies. 'Rape culture'? Go fuck yourself you dumb cunt. Doesn't exist. You will NEVER get rid of rape or the desire for some men to do it. They know its wrong, don't care, and its never going to change.

It doesnt help that in the original light novel the "horrifying rape" is just this

yep, 3 lines and is not mentioned again, it but you remember the guy that was swinging his sword like a moron? well he get the Butcher treatment

But is ok because he was male and cis and probably deserved it

It did not help that the author actually give him a little of backstory only to say later "well this shit happen every day in this job such is life"

Someone should mod Heretic to make this real

That cynical humor might come back later down the line considering so far in the manga all signs seem to be pointing to some stereotypical big bad having figured out that all the high ranking adventurers tune out the second goblins are mentioned and is thus employing goblins to do all their bidding unopposed.

Here's my hot take on goblin slayer, speaking as both a massive weeb and a feminist:

I think there's good reasons to not like goblin slayer, and I think it's perfectly reasonable to be upset about sensitives topics being treated as cheap drama, such as rape. One of my pet peeves is in fact when rape gets used for cheap drama.

That said, I still liked the manga a lot. I think having bits of light hearted screwing around helps make it better than just a constant grimdark edge fest, the characters have pretty good banter, and it's well drawn. Little things like Goblin Slayer asking how ice cream is made are both kind of cute and also interesting, because it gives the implication that the reason he knows so many random things is because he just asks about them.

The anime adaptation is passable, I guess.

I normally don't care much about salt either way, but the sheer level of hysterics over GS makes it's creation justifiable. complaining about Crunchyroll not having any kind of warning about the content is reasonable, writing essays about how it's facist propaganda is just hilarious.

The fascist propaganda was pure clickbait. And the Crunchyroll warning was because these stupid, stupid fucks rated it PG.

Hell, if anything the anime toned those scenes way down compared to what they were in the manga.

Though the manga does also seem to be using the rape scenes to touch on few points that are common cliches in shows of the same genre that the anime kinda glosses over: what with the dude in the slaughtered party who'd normally be Generic Anime Protagonist #53232377371 being painted as being somewhat inconsiderate/self-centered in that he (and to a certain extent the rest of the party) mentions that the goblins have kidnapped women without considering what goblins could possibly want with them - nor what that could mean for his harem adventuring party that's 3/4 women. He even has a generic Anime Protagonist flashback where he's taught by a high-ranking adventurer that the secret to becoming a The Greatest Adventurer is the power of friendship and nothing else before he gets ripped to pieces.

That's probably another reason they hate it to be honest. A lot of the main over-arching themes are about the dangers of failing to take a threat seriously because you consider it beneath and the importance of being prepared for the sake of your own safety and others.

Pretty much, its kind of interesting at how it exists in this sort of fantasy world where no one takes goblins seriously except this one guy.

Actually we already had a Goblin Slayer game for years.

I think there was a plan for adding joke subs with voice clips of Dawn of war, THE EMPEROR LIGHT IS MY TORCH

Also some neckbeards in /tg/ apparently are creating rules and stats for him in Warhammer 40k, i suppose Hatred (Orks), Immortal Warrior and Feel no pain are going to be there, but like a friend told me "he probably is going to be like a Inquisitor of the ordo xenos without the bling"

Everything I’m hearing about the first episode of Goblin Slayer just makes me think of the first episode of Akage no Kill.

I havent seen it yet but, it makes me think that the people who are bitching about this, really never did read berserk up to the part where trolls are doing the same thing but, is actually shown in graphic detail.

God bless the Warhammer 40K fandom's autism!

While I can see the Goblin Slayer as an inquisitor I think if he got the right body modifications he'd make a fantastic Astartes.

So on November 3 and 5 in North America they will show remastered versions Of Bardock: Father of Goku and Fusions Reborn so if anyone finds something that show which cinema show them I'd be interested in finding out
Why not show the Bardock special on October 17? That's the day it originally aired on TV in Japan.

Finally sitting down and watching the whole monogatori series for the first time.
Not done with bakemonogatari yet, I'm starting the snake arc today. I'm a slow watcher.
It's weird and I like it. I went in pretty much blind aside from memes, and it subverted my expectations quite a bit.
Like goddamn I was not expecting this much dialogue. Fun dialogue.

I surprisingly actually like koyomi araragi so far.
and I really really like all the girls so far in the show.

It shocking how little can actually happen episode to episode in the mongatari shows yet you don't feel annoyed by this. You love it.

Boku No Michael Cera (Zombieland Saga) is pretty good, just make sure to watch it without looking up what their twist on the zombie genre is.

I spent the entire first episode of this like Tommy Wiseau. :story:

I just finished Persona 5 The Animation.

Somehow, this adaptation was even more pathetic than Persona 4 The Golden Animation. A–1 needs to be kept away from Persona at all costs

Credit research company Tokyo Shoko Research (TSR) reported on Thursday that anime studio Production IMS filed for bankruptcy in a Tokyo district court on September 21, and the studio received approval to start the bankruptcy proceedings on October 3. Tokyo lawyer Yūsuke Date is handling the bankruptcy for the studio. The studio has about 250 million yen (about US$2.23 million) in debt.

TSR reported in June that the company had begun consolidating its debt as of June 7. TSR cited an unnamed source who said that the staff were entering the legal proceedings with a mind to file for bankruptcy.

The studio has not yet made a public statement. The company's official website is no longer online. TSR reported that the company was restructuring and downsizing in December.

Later in December, animator Teru Miyazaki posted but deleted a complaint on Twitter that an anime studio he implied was Production IMS was not paying its animators.

Production IMS launched in 2013. Beginning with Inari Kon Kon in 2014, the studio has produced anime such as Date A Live II, Hybrid x Heart Magias Academy Ataraxia, High School Fleet, Active Raid, and The Testament of Sister New Devil. Most recently, it produced Takunomi. (seen above right) for the winter 2018 season. The studio received a Studio Award in Newtype Anime Awards 2015-2016.
