Shark drags woman into crocodile-infested waters in Australia

A “once-in-a-lifetime” trip in May for a woman in Australia quickly turned into a harrowing experience when she suffered a bite while feeding a shark, which then dragged her into the water.

Melissa Brunning, 34, was on a yacht in the remote Kimberley region in the northwest part of the country, located about 1,550 miles north of Perth, when she tried to hand-feed up to four tawny nurse sharks swimming around her boat.

Brunning told the West Australian that she didn't realize she shouldn’t hand feed a shark, until the animal became "like a Hoover," sucking her right index finger into its mouth full of rows of razor-sharp teeth.

“I think the shark was in shock as much as I was ... the only way I can describe it is this immense pressure and it felt like it was shredding it off the bone,” she told the paper. “I came up and I was like, ‘I’ve lost my finger, my finger’s gone.’”

The shark also pulled her into the water of Dugong Bay, which is inhabited by saltwater crocodiles that can grow up to 23 feet long and weigh more than a ton, according to Sky News.

The entire harrowing encounter was captured on video, which shows Brunning screaming as she is dragged into the water before the boat's crew and her friends pull her out.

Nurse sharks are "bottom-dwellers" that are mostly harmless to humans, according to National Geographic. They are up to 14 feet long and have "very strong jaws filled with thousands of tiny, serrated teeth," the magazine notes.

The sharks will bite and act defensive if they are stepped on, or bothered by divers who assume they’re docile.

Brunning sustained cuts, a fracture, a torn ligament and a bad infection from the bite, but did not lose her finger.

The 34-year-old told the West Australianthe incident was “completely my fault," and "just a blonde doing a stupid thing."

"It’s not the shark’s fault at all, but it could have been a lot worse,” she told the paper, adding, "I’m not a shark victim .. I have full respect for sharks, I think they’re incredible. I’ve always had the opinion that when you’re in the water, they’re top of the food chain, it’s their domain."

Seeing as this happened in Australia, it’s a miracle this moron is still alive.

I'm equally impressed as to how she "didn't know she shouldn't hand-feed a shark" and to how she just completely owned up to being an idiot. You don't see people saying, "Yeah, that was dumb, I deserved that." nearly enough, these days.

Why would you... nevermind. I know. :autism:

I fucking hate Disney.

Hey, she owned up to her own mistake, and apparently still gets to have all her fingers, although I have to imagine one of them is pretty banged up.

I imagine in the future she'll think twice before inserting any body parts into or near anything that can be described as "A vortex of razor sharp teeth".

However, I bet we'll soon get another headline "I honestly had no idea you weren't supposed to insert paperclips into electrical sockets"

Well, hey, at least she acknowledges it was her fault. Props to her for taking responsibility like an adult. I can so easily see a far, far dumber person saying how there needs to be warnings in places, trying to sue the yacht company, wanting to "raise awareness" and all other kinds of dumb shit.

She made a mistake, she got punished, she took it like an adult. Good for her. Sad about the finger though, but sometimes lessons are learned the hard way.

People hand feed and pet nurse sharks all the time because they are considered harmless. I don't know why it's allowed though. The practice should be outlawed as they can be dangerous if provoked. They get annoyed easily and react as you'd expect. Much like pitbulls they will grab on and refuse to let go.

This is what their teeth look like:

Imagine your fingers trapped between those. You ain't getting them back. The teeth face backwards so whatever is caught in them can't easily slide out. This woman is very lucky she didn't lose her fingers. It could have been much worse.

A year or so ago there was another nurse shark attack in the news. The woman stupidly grabbed its tail. So it spun around and sunk it's teeth into her arm and refused to let go.

Just think about how stupid it is to hand feed sharks. You feed them meat. With your fingers. Which are also made of meat. The shark just sees it as bonus meat.

So it was basically this:

only with sharks?

Even herbivores like horses can be dangerous, since their jaws are strong enough to tear off your finger if they accidently bite it. That's why you don't grab wahtever you want to feed to a horse and feed it with open and flat palms. A horse doesn't even want to bite you and it can fuck up your hand. What in the fuck do people expect when they try to feed a carnivorous predator?

It's because of people like her that there are warning labels on everything.
