He didn't get sued over the meme. The media articles linked in the OP explain the backstory.

The meme relates to a non-publication motion filed by Ashu Solo in respect of the defamation proceedings.. If you feel like wading through 32 pages of his bullshit, the motion is attached to this post.

I have to go AFK for a bit my TLDR version of things (just from what I've read of this case):
  • Ashu Solo & Hamid Reza Arabnia create or had some part in a conference called "WORLDCOMP" (World Congress in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, & Applied Computing)
  • There are a variety of "allegations" that WORLDCOMP would take people's papers and allow them to present with no real peer review. Which, if true, allows people to shortcut a lot of the hard work in academia.
  • Someone or a group of people start sperging about a "defamation campaign":
    • "These people formed a team and mailing to different forums, groups, blogs and individuals, heavily criticizing WORLDCOMP. Some of them have personal or professional enmity with Professor Hamid Arabnia and some of them don't like WORLDCOMP for one reason or the other. They are using proxy servers in Georgia (Athens, Atlanta), Florida (Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Orlando), Chicago and Texas (Austin, Houston) and sending the defamatory emails."

  • Allegedly this group of people were able to submit 2 fake papers
