Today Trump ordered the Pentagon to establish the 6th U.S. military branch, the U.S. Space Force.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Space Council, Trump ordered the Pentagon to immediately establish a national “space force” that would become the sixth branch of the armed forces.

“We are going to have a space force,” Trump said in Washington D.C. “An Air Force and a Space Force. Separate, but equal.”

This is not the first time that Trump has floated the idea of establishing a “space force.” The president mentioned the idea in May during a ceremony at the White House honoring the Army Black Knights college football team.

Trump did not go into details about what military role the so-called “space force” would carry out or who would command it, but he framed space as a national security issue, saying he does not want "China and Russia and other countries leading us."

The president said the United States will "be the leader by far" in space and is looking to revive the nation's flagging space program by returning the United States to the moon and soon reaching Mars.

It contained names and ranks of U.S. Air Force personnel

That's Air Force, this is an entirely separate branch of the military.

Just like there are Army helicopters and planes, there can still be Air Force presence operating in space, but this is an entire branch dedicated to warfare and defense outside of the USA's atmosphere (I think would be the definition).

If this were a different president then MovieBob would have a massive, pulsating erection right now.

Spacemarines are cool and what not but i think the enclave is a good starting point

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Space_Treaty

The Outer Space Treaty represents the basic legal framework of international space law. Among its principles, it bars states party to the treaty from placing weapons of mass destruction in Earth orbit, installing them on the Moon or any other celestial body, or otherwise stationing them in outer space. It exclusively limits the use of the Moon and other celestial bodies to peaceful purposes and expressly prohibits their use for testing weapons of any kind, conducting military maneuvers, or establishing military bases, installations, and fortifications (Article IV). However, the Treaty does not prohibit the placement of conventional weapons in orbit and thus some highly destructive attack strategies such as kinetic bombardment are still potentially allowable.[6] The treaty also states that the exploration of outer space shall be done to benefit all countries and that space shall be free for exploration and use by all the States.

Militarization of space is gonna get real messed up real fast though. And considering how shit that gets blown up is gonna inevitably fall back to earth, it'd a recipe for disaster.
It costs so much to put shit into space that it's all flimsy and light-weight. Whatever falls down is likely to burn up on re-entry. There really isn't anything bulky and rugged enough up there to survive the trip.

The big worry is blowing shit up up there causing a bunch of space debris that will then smash into valuable and useful satellites.

Fuck the rules. Go full GATTACA on those motherfuckers.

I hope this space force thing isn't for putting weapons in space. If it can be hacked, eventually it will.
> implying weapons platforms don't already exist in the Nazi bases on the dark side of the moon

This can go one of two ways:

1) In twenty years this turns out to be a great idea as we battle Chicoms from space.
2) Nothing ever actually happens and the idea goes nowhere.
