Trump's been doing little things too like allowing visiting Taiwanese representatives to wear RoC emblems when visiting during his first term which Biden immediately undid. Trump isn't a fan of being dependent on Taiwan, but his first and 2nd term he was always seen as pro Taiwan, especially in Taiwan.
 
Black Lives Matter will fall over themselves trying to organize a call out over a joke about a drug addict but won't lift a finger to try and help curb a lot of the so called "teen takeover" phenomenon happening across major cities.

IMO, the big difference between now and 2024 is that whatever ambitions China may have had of invading Taiwan have been pushed back at least 10 years due to Venezuela and Iran. The fear of getting mogged by the USN is a way more effective deterrent than some missiles in Taiwan.

I think the deal here is Trump agrees to publicly back off on supporting Taiwan, while Xi has the understanding that if China tries any funny shit they’ll be staring down three carrier strike groups in the South China Sea. Xi is not retarded enough to get high off his own supply of propaganda, if he had any illusions that the PLAN was a peer power to the USN they have certainly been dispelled by recent events.

It sounds like him pushing his tariff agenda than him wanting to abandon Taiwan. He also tells Taiwan and China to cool it a little bit so it seems like we are back to status quo than total Chinese victory.

Bro, he's saying China is "very very powerful" to Taiwan and very close to Taiwan, whereas the US is very far from Taiwan (true). Then he accuses Taiwan of stealing our "chip industry." Then he said that we were stupid to not strangle Taiwan with tariffs in the past. Then he ends on a "both sides need to cool it" as though the sides are even moderately within the realm of the same power.

Of course you can't trust anything Trump says, but christ, if I was in Taiwan, I'd be very worried. Beyond that, I don't personally care. But if you're an enjoyer of the the current order, this is more or less a grenade thrown into your living room.
