I don't know if it's possible for a non-resident foreigner to sue a resident foreigner in Canadian courts, but my brief reading of their defamation laws make it seem like it's really easy to rape people for it. None of the overviews or gov websites mentioned proving damages. I don't know anything about Canuck laws or courts so maybe it doesn't actually work like that.

I think your on the right general track. The cat is the excuse, I think she's just desperate to not be in Edmonton for a while. They're probably trying to larp about cutting back and not being extravagant with their finances, and she took the first outside excuse she could to fly off, "teehee its not a vacation I'm helping a friend, but while I'm there...." kinda shit. I don't even really suspect its monkey branching right now, I really just think its bog standard financial irresponsibility and general immaturity.
