I think they gerrymandered as much as they possibly can. The more they gerrymander the more they dilute their votes in the blue districts. Gerrymander too much, and in a bad year the entire state could go red because the margins were too thin.
That's the problem Republicans are having in red states. Many need a black district so they have any safe Republican districts. If there was ever a mid-term where that will be on display it's this one where there won't be such thing as a safe Republican incumbent and Trump's endorsement will be a negative by November.
