her case is exceptionally sad. an absentee father, going through self image issues, a mother who has no idea what's going on in her head and feeling socially ostracized. i always felt, especially with the fact that she took her phone apart, that she was groomed by an older guy who told her what she wanted to hear on kik. different SIM card in the phone to keep their relationship a secret and a clandestine meeting and she was never heard from again.
It's especially concerning since she didn't resurface after turning 18 like Alicia Navarro.
I'm confused how they ended up losing her on cctv, since they had found so much.

Paula will later claim that Mekayla had no history of behavioural or mental health issues, but the rows of self-harm scars on her thighs say otherwise.
Sounds like the whole mess with Mitrice Richardson's mom insisting her daughter wasn't Bipolar despite the fact that just before her disappearance, Mitrice wrote a bunch of rambling posts on Facebook at all hours and displayed typical Bipolar behavior.

yeah it reminded me of those cases where some girls are having bad homelives, disappear, and end up resurfacing years later. but her not taking physical money / medicine makes me think this might not be the case especially considering that it's been a decade now. unfortunately she seemed like the perfect victim for some sick fuck online given how she publicly advertised on social media how vulnerable she was.

The disassembling her phone part can be explained by battery issues in that era of Android. They would freeze up sometimes and you would have to pull the battery, or it would report the wrong battery percent until you removed it. I'm basically convinced she was human trafficked.

Mekayla Bali
I believe she met some guy online in hopes of starting a new life and probably does not / did not want to be found.

This is the RCMP after all.

Unless she didn’t want anything associated with her name in her possession if she wanted to start a new life, like what would be on her medicine.

If she was older I'd agree. A typical MO for kids that get trafficked is for someone to act as their boyfriend/girlfriend and lovebomb them and make huge promises. It's likely that whoever she was talking to promised her a vacation and five grand.

It's actually super creepy how prevalent child predators are. A friend of mine ran away from home at 15/16 and spent the night at the bus depot. A really kind man approached him and offered for him to stay at his apartment. So my buddy goes and finds a bunch of other runaways there, and after letting him stay and feeding him the guy starts insinuating that my buddy owes him. Buddy has a moment of clarity and realizes that he's going to end up a rentboy if he stays.

I don't even live anyplace big, either. It wouldn't be a stretch to see how a lonely girl from Yorkton got promised the world by traffickers.

There was a Jane Doe found in York County, Pennsylvania and Mekayla was excluded after testing.
This quote from her stands out though: "Looking for Snapchat friends because I have none in real life. Add me...Please don't be a greasy fuck and send me gross ass nudes. Just looking for a friend."

She was likely trafficked out of North America. The few women who make it out of sex slavery say they get moved around a lot, Japan is a big point of transit for trafficked women, and a lot end up in eastern europe apparently. The Hells Angels are heavily involved in human trafficking. Supposedly once the girls age out they are sold for organs.

Her phone provider has no record of her using data when she was on camera using data. I would imagine some creep convinced her to get a separate SIM to keep their “relationship” private and that they were supposed to meet up either at Regina or a place that connects to Regina.

Like another user said it’s hard to believe there isn’t any other footage from that time frame. The police make it seem like she just vanished despite being able to track her movement that entire day

I would like to know if she second phobe was using Tim Horton's wifi. If yes, couldn't they pull some data from that?
And how precise if geofencing? Couldn't they use that?

they never went into detail about wifi data being secured other than that it wasn't. nobody knows what her second number was and in all seriousness, being that she was trying to pawn jewelry for money, there's a chance whoever took her bought it for her.

Not really creepy as much as it is annoying: Jack the Ripper. The dude killed 5 prostitutes(supposedly more), and that's all we really know, everything else is speculation and folklore. Stabbings happen everyday in London, so how this dude got famous out of it is beyond me, I mean look at this shit
When japs put you in one of their shitty gacha games as some fuckable pretty boy, you know you got a problem. I wonder why this guy, of all the unexplained murderers, got the attention he did.

Because it was the first sensational case to hit right when mass media was really shifting into gear with newspapers and books. The devil is in the details; it was dramatic and the idea that there was a madman out there not just stabbing hookers, but savagely mutilated them sparked the imagination. Lind of like how the Zodiac only killed a few people but his weird costume and letters made it more compelling than someone like the Green River Killer who had a high number bit was relatively boring because he picked up prostitutes strangled them, and dumped them rinse and repeat.

didn't they ID jack the ripper with DNA or am i retarded?

You're retarded.

Well, maybe not. A few years back, fiction crime author Patricia Cornwell published a book called Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper Case Closed, in which she claimed to have uncovered the identity of Jack the Ripper with 100% certainty. Her conclusion: Jack the Ripper was a mid-tier artist named Walter Sickert, whose identity she sussed out based largely on his movements (he was in America when the Ripper killings ceased, and I think she tried to tie him to some unsolved murders here at the time) and ... the fact that some of his paintings resembled Ripper kill scenes. This was, to say the least, somewhat tenuous, and as part of the dog-and-pony show she'd set up she purchased and subsequently destroyed an actual Sickert painting in order to obtain some of his DNA.

This might be what you're thinking of ... but no DNA was conclusively found. Destroying a Sickert painting isn't on the same level as destroying a van Gogh or a Rembrandt, but the artist community was still severely outraged, accusing Cornwell of destroying an irreplaceable piece of art history as part of a stunt.

Since the book came out years ago and the Ripper case is still unsolved, it's hard to argue with them.

i looked up what i remembered and i was thinking of aaron kosminski. i thought they had found definitive DNA but it was mitochondrial DNA on a piece of fabric that was severely mishandled. he was a suspect at the time but nothing has actually been proven.

Watched her get interviewed a few times back then, watching the Today show with my mom. She's not a serious person, and it was obvious in the interviews that she didn't have any answers for doubters, but she did like to talk about herself and her feelings. I don't think she ever believed it herself. Never read the book.

Yeah I just found the stuff about Kosminski while double checking myself (apparently the destruction of a Sickert painting by Cornwell is merely an allegation).

I still think the Patricia Cornwell stuff is pretty funny, although maybe less so if you don't remember it. There was such a hoopla about it, but 25 years later it's blatantly obvious she was just attention-seeking.

a tale as old as time. just like how the zodiac has been definitively proven to be 50 different people over the years with people coming out of the woodwork to say that their stepdad from the 70's wore glasses just like he did!

I find her arguments utterly unconvincing. That doesn't mean they're wrong, but she did not prove them by any means.

It's been years since I peeked into this particular rabbit hole (the fact it's become such obscure trivia suggests you're not alone in being unconvinced) and one of the bigger goofs was that she theorized Sickert was impotent thanks to an imperfectly corrected birth defect, and this was what fueled his sexual rage against prostitutes. Except ... Sickert was divorced on grounds of infidelity. He married twice more in his life.

Now I suppose it could be a sort of chaste infidelity, but that seems pretty unlikely.
