With how strung out him and Kayla look I'm surprised the church his kids go to haven't called CPS again. My assumption is the grandparents are still managing the kids lives outside the house because they know Nick can't be trusted and that's why all his interactions with them are so weird, they view the grandparents as the authority figure and Nick as some guy they put up with.
