My take is that, the singular way in which Jer is honest with himself is that he knows he has a price. So when he looks at other political commentators not being absolutely 100% dedicated enough to their positions to a level in which they'd be willing to be crucified for them, he can point and say "look at that, they're not loyal either! That means I'm not uniquely awful!" I believe this is how he clings onto his biggest flaw, his biggest sin - his pride in being able to point a finger at someone else and say that they have it too, even when they're not even remotely comparable levels.
