After reading it I was very confused. Obviously keeping young women enslaved for breeding is pretty high up there on the 'very bad let's not do that' scale but the main character had some really strange takes that took me out of it a few times. Like when Offred repeatedly calls the barren "Woman of the House" a dried up old hag. And keeps saying how she's useless now that her ovaries don't work. Seems pretty... 'anti-woman' to me. Or when she keeps getting hot and bothered by the fascist psycho who wants her to play scrabble. Or how she shits on her boyfriend immediately after he professes his undying love for her when the laws for women change (it takes her literally seconds in-book-time to decide that his desire to save her is really just patronizing bullshit). It honestly made it pretty hard for me to sympathize with her.

I was reading the thread of that random white trash guy who got shot by darkies in a gas station parking lot, and one of his habits was reacting to every perceived slight by raging and wishing extreme misfortune on others, only to smooth it over later and be like "well you know we both got heated, plus you started it". In his mind, someone did something rude to him so he's justified in doing something rude back to them, nevermind that the crime against him was something like "not responding to his texts within an hour".

Will is mad mostly because Republicans are doing anything, because they're bad, and so anything they do must be bad; we call this the "fruit of the MAGA tree" principle. The gas run thing is funny because it's a paradox; saying that people should cause an artificial shortage of gas implies that without such action there wouldn't be a shortage. But the whole reason to cause it is to create resentment against... a gas shortage? Him saying people will forget about it in a week, in addition to being incredibly accurate and foresightful, seems to stem from an assumption that the price spike will smooth itself out shortly, and if that's the case why should anyone care?
