Pete Docter, chief creative officer at Pixar and director of “Monsters Inc.,” “Up” and “Inside Out,” recently told the Wall Street Journal why the studio decided to completely overhaul 2025’s “Elio” and cut out the film’s LGBTQ storyline.

Docter told the WSJ that Pixar didn’t want to expose its young audience to things they weren’t ready to see or hadn’t discussed with their parents. He said, “We’re making a movie, not hundreds of millions of dollars of therapy.”

“Elio” follows a lonely kid who looks to the stars for friends after being rejected as an outsider by other kids his age. Despite the clever premise, WSJ reports that the film tested poorly in early screenings, with most audiences saying they wouldn’t pay to see it in theaters. In response, Docter ordered a complete overhaul of the film, even though a significant chunk of the animation was complete. The overhaul led to the exit of the film’s original director, Adrian Molina.

Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi then stepped in and made significant changes to “Elio.” This included, according to the WSJ, removing moments that indicated the title character was gay. Previous versions of the film reportedly showed Elio with a pink bike and had a scene where he imagines a life together with his male crush. The changes sparked backlash within the Pixar staff, drama that was compounded by Disney’s decision to cut a transgender character from Pixar’s animated series “Win or Lose.”

“Elio” launched in June 2025, earning $150 million worldwide at the end of its run. That would be a stellar number if it weren’t for the fact that the film cost $150 million to produce, not factoring in global marketing costs.

Ok what the fuck? I have never even seen let a lone heard of that movie just now. And looking at the the cover art I think someone in there had absolutely no faith in that movie.
I vaguely remember a narrative discussed by the anti-woke channels (probably Clownfish) about Disney not marketing the movie at all. And that was probably one factor:

Looper: Disney Fans Criticize The Lack Of Marketing For Strange World
Salon: “Strange World” is a box office flop, but not for the reasons the right is claiming
This probably doesn’t need to be said, but these claims have little basis in the reality of why “Strange World” tanked, other than the easily observable fact that the studio did the bare minimum to promote it.

What little advertising it did featured the gorgeous animation and little else. In a pandemic age dominated by vast streaming options and shorter exclusivity windows between theatrical releases and video-on-demand debuts, that is not enough to lure people to their local multiplexes. But as a thought experiment, let’s say the preview marketing provided specific information about “Strange World.” It probably would’ve faced an uphill battle anyway, and for reasons having nothing to do with the characters’ complexions or sexual orientation.

I refuse any Cars 2 slander (the movie fucking sucks but the memes about it are fire).

Pretty sure Inside Out was successful because many were able to relate to the psychological angle of the movie. Not because it was gay or a literal therapy session for the writers, but rather because it told a story well, with colorful characters.

Steven Universe and MLP were the biggest crystallised AIDS bomb ever made.

The fact that I who haven't watched western cartoons save for Venture bros even know how gay Steven Jewniverse is proof that it is pure nigger prolapse.

Gonna add in SG-1, venture bros, and samurai jack to this.
I'd say yes to Samurai Jack only if Season 5 was made right after Season 4 and not over a decade later, and proved to me why creators should have a general game plan for how the series should go. Season 5 feels way too different and has a lot of forced cringy adult 'humor' or breaks previously established canon and logic just to create lore for Jack's suddenly dropped in dark half-demon waifoo love interest to exist, and utterly nerfs Aku and makes him OOC just to avoid why his character wouldn't eventually notice Jack is truly swordless and thus promptly curbstomp Jack into paste. It's like Genndy(sp?) absolutely lost the plot after 3 episodes of Season 5 and just shoved in last minute weird stuff just so this love interest could 'exist.'

Season 5 made me no longer a fan of this show and I hate it for that, I really do. I see people defending this turd of a Season just because of Ashi, and how he 'deserves' her or something.

> Piss poor management so bad it was legendary.
> Musical.
> Unfunny jokes.
> Main plot eventually rushed due to multiple filler episodes about characters nobody but the writers liked.
> On the nose anime/videogame references.
> Reveal that undermined everything that came before.
> Toxic, retard fandom filled with troons.
> Fucked its whole premise before s1 even ended.
> The gays and allegories for the gays and gay oppression.
> Racism bad short.
> Pointless crossover with a superior show.
> Horrible morals that includes allowing absolute scum to stay near you because friendship/family.

Every single sin committed by modern tv (and especially cartoons) can unironically be found within steven universe, and I wasn't even close to be done listing them when I decided to post this.

The original quote can be read another way: the screened movie was traumatizing to children and would have left them with lifelong scars. They all would have eneded up causing a hundred million dollars in therapy, not providing it.

Everyone seems to forget that MLP:FiM was pretty explicitly made for little girls, and then the furfags and Predditors found it and raped it to death. If you look at it through the lens of "media for girls", it was pretty smartly written and taught decent lessons. To begin with, at least.

Steven Universe was pretty explicitly made for faggots.

So you're saying it would have been good for the economy?

I was just glad it wrapped things up and wasn't terrible. And if I were being pedantic I would say 'uh, achckually we were talking about shows ending at season 3 but season 4 was good so ending at 3 would've be bad!'.

Still you're right that season 5 was a big step down.

Elio seemed crafted from the ground up to not appeal to people. Gay boy main character, Grubhuh ad brown characters, single mother, not to mention the atrocious composition of the entire film. It genuinely didn't have a single element that was remotely appealing to anyone normal.

Having the plot be the writer's therapy session has been the rule for western media in the last decade.

Adventure Time ruined everything.
I would argue that was Steven Universe. Pretty much the entire show was a faggot tranny therapy session. Adventure Time at least sometimes had fun.

That tweet is absolutely retarded. One Google search will tell you that Docter came up with the idea when he noticed his eldest daughter suddenly became introverted when she hit her teens. In that sense, Riley is literally his own child and comes from the perspective of a concerned parent.

Childless adults missing the point about Pixar's mission will never not be frustrating to see.

God I wish that cartoon had a physical release for the whole series, so few fun space adventure shows for the kids.

Buzz Lightyear's commanding officer was a butch black lesbian. Buzz, voiced by Chris Evans, was a white male buffoon and got everyone stranded while the LBGTQ+ womyn of color was hypercompetent. She raises a son with her lesbian lover, and a later descendent (womyn of color as well) becomes Buzz's future teammate. At one point Buzz has a chance to go back in time, but refuses out of consideration for the LBGTQ+ womyn of color's proud existence and lifestyle.

Banned in most of the Arab world. ABSOLUTELY HARAM. Commercial flop that lost Pixar $100,000,000.

Real niggas know there’s only one true Buzz Lightyear spinoff.

Adventure Time was cute and enjoyable.

Bojack Horseman ruined everything.
Bojack Horseman came later and was at least outwardly made for adults, so the damage was limited. Issue was what created the Tumblr generation.

I would argue that was Steven Universe. Pretty much the entire show was a faggot tranny therapy session. Adventure Time at least sometimes had fun.
The point where I quit AT was the episode with the flowers and bees where the main character moped around the entire episode. It was clear that the writer was dealing with a breakup and decided to expose children to it.
