Even if you capture strategic parts (outside) of Iran, then what? You can't really pressure the regime in any way that's not just bombing them from above. If you send military in the country, you're fucked. If you don't, you're just sitting there while they slowly starve/lose electricity/become upset at the US. Any support the US has inside Iran is being damaged every time a non-regime Iranian dies.Regime change won't happen without boots on the ground. The attempts to improvise a kurdish uprising have fallen through. A full on invasion would be madness and would have to be prepared for months. A more limited goal like capturing strategic islands or very specific parts of Irans coastline might be doable in a few days.
Edit: unless your assumption is that you can control the strait fully without losing soldiers for it... Which I don't think is possible.
