There's a tricky thing about that. The Ayatollah is hand picked by the previous one. By killing him we have broken their religious line of succession which could lead to a schism or at least a religious crisis. On top of that shit show, the current Ayatollah also had no direct next if kin or siblings(it's rumored that he was gay). I'm not an all knowing expert on everything Islam but I'm curious how the adherents will cope with this.
It wouldn't be, which is why we're hoping the Iranians don't go that route. Ideally they transition to a secular government that has favorable views of the West. If they choose to just vote in another religious extremist regime, we'll be back to do this again. Trump said exactly that. They have the illusion of choice but in reality it's there's only one choice with a positive outcome.
