If I was the guy writing this I would have this all be the Ayatollah's elaborate way of escaping his job and fleeing to become a fucking tour boat operator on the Caspian sea. He spent the past decade digging a secret tunnel out the wall of his bunker with a beardcomb before leaking all of Iran's security codes to Mossad and then hightailing it while everyone around him freaks out

It's possible this is all they can put up in terms of defence? Or their missiles simply aren't enough to get through the defences Israel/USA/UAE/Iraq/Kuwait have set up and so on. I doubt Iran was able to replenish all their stocks and given the unrest that happened no too long ago, there might be too many fires internally for them to have paid much attention to external threats?

Civilian lives are ultimately worth less than ports and refineries and putting up some measure of response to getting attacked is better than doing absolutely nothing from their POV.

Spoke to my azizam in bushehr this morning before the internet got shut down but as of about 3:00 a.m. she and her family were okay sheltering in their house. And My friend and her family that lived in Tehran got out before shit kicked off. It was wild because when I talked to both of them on the phone before the internet went out they were literally laughing and joking and celebrating my country bombing theirs.

It's a point to worry, but remember the United States is a energy exporter. Worst comes to worse. They'll just buy from us or Canada. But mostly us. Interestingly enough, one of the closest Middle Eastern natural gas deposits is actually in Israel (well off their Coast but it's in the Israeli economic area so it's israeli), so the euros will be buying israeli natural gas. I wouldn't worry too much. It seems that the United States and Israel have not been striking the oil infrastructure as of now. The thought process is they take out the missiles. They take out the government and then the Iranian people after the strikes and will be able to take back their country. And turn the spigot back on.

Iran's entire strategic position is built upon a layer of bluffs and threats. Nobody in the middle east likes them. Which means that Iran's entire strategic alliance was based on the support of insurgent groups representing ethnic interests around the region. The Houthi's, Iraqi Shia militias, Hezbollah, and up until recently the Allawites who were in control of Syria.

The problem for Iran is that since the Gaza War, Israel has been systematically dismantling this network of alliances. Hezbollah and Hamas got slaughtered, and the entire debacle culminated in the 12 days war where the IDF clowned Iran's air defense. This put Iran into a very precarious position.

Rather then deescalate, they doubled down. Threatening everyone in the region with the implicit threat of "If we go down, you go down with us." The hardcore IRGC folks blame the Arabs for letting the US and Israel operate freely in the region, and for supporting the collapse of their interests in Syria. From their perspective, there is no functional difference at this point between the Arab states and Israel/USA. Which to be fair, is not entirely wrong.

So now that they are being attacked, Iran's bluff was called. It seems counter intuitive for them to respond to getting attacked by America to retaliate by bombing the Saudi's. However, because of their previous bluster, if they didn't strike at the Arabs they would have lost some serious Izzat regionally.

tl;dr

Its combination of needing to make good on previous threats, standard middle eastern honor culture, and the fact that the Iranian Government may be decapitated and the front line units are just lashing out based on pre scripted plans that were based on the prior bluster rather then immediate tactical necessity.

Well at that point it wouldn't even really be a protest because he's dead it would be rebellion. I don't think the IRGC could contain that and us striking them.
