I feel for people with actual Tourette’s. It must be so frustrating to see what looks like an incredibly difficult condition to manage be treated like a fun larp by teenagers who want attention. And then to be called out in the media for a completely normal Tourette’s tick. Poor guy.

And the two actors up on stage? Boo fucking hoo - must be so hard to be a rich, successful, well respected actor. If they had an ounce of decency they would put out a statement saying they appreciate people’s concern and while racism remains this was not a racist attack. It was a man with a medical condition and the media needs to stop with the shaming and move on to things that really matter.

There would be no end to the crying of internalized racism and Uncle Tom allegations if Jordan or Lindo said anything that could be construed as trying to minimize it, which is why I'm sure their PR people have advised them not to. The whole thing is such a Streisand effect moment; so many gorillions more people got to hear the dreaded N-bomb get dropped now that it's become an international scandal. If they had just ignored it and moved on it would have blown over, and nobody would be victimized by the nigger word every time they open social media or a news app.

Totally. John Lennon famously beat the shit out of his first wife, and beloved musician David Bowie almost certainly fucked an underaged girl, but in both cases their expressed views are “right” so those uncomfortable facts are ignored.

The whole approach to social justice and disability advocacy has been a disaster for the people who most need the help because the only tangible results were to create a small number of highly paid “disability advocacy” positions that lecture major companies and recommend things that will never happen.

I’ve sat in presentations where some blue hair getting a 50k paycheque for a three hour workshop has told a room full of execs that we should accept autism self diagnoses as legitimate and people with autism should be allowed to set their own job boundaries. So if someone with autism should set their own start and finish hours and be allowed to deviate from them and they should be free to leave meetings the find not helpful and we should also respect that they may go “non verbal.” The event ended with a short video that implied refusing to sleep with someone with Down’s syndrome was ableist. None of those recommendations were implemented of course.

Meanwhile, someone who has an unfortunate outburst related to Tourette’s is scorched in the media as if he was giving a keynote speech for the kkk. It’s not even that his beliefs were wrong, his verbal tic was problematic so he goes into the proverbial gas chamber of public scorn.

I don’t think politics have anything to do with it, just the era these things occurred. Jerry Lee Lewis was a fanatical right wing Christian, he married a 13 year old cousin, savagely beat his many wives and even murdered one! (never did a day in jail for it) Elvis was a staunch right wing guy and everybody was fine with him dating a 14 year old and marrying her when she turned 18 made it perfectly fine.

Wife beating and sex with underaged girls were just not the taboos they are today. Wife beating was fairly common and underage sex was looked at with a wink for men, as long as you didn’t physically force her too much. (The girls were viewed as tarts, but the men were just doing what came naturally. )

David Bowie, and almost every rock star or wanna-be rock star in the 1970’s, had sex with underage girls. It was so rampant and common they even printed a magazine to give advice to teenage groupies and provided sexy photos of them as if they were merchandise.

Today the views on sex with teens under 18 is nearly puritanical vs how it was viewed in 1970.

Imagine living a life where the one thing you want people to know about you is that you once faked a respiratory crisis, badly (and fatly, as Joyce Carol Oates succinctly would put it). I find that quite hilarious.

Essentially removing all sources of secondary gain. Similar approaches are sometimes used for chronic pain. My knowledge is about programs for kids though, I don’t know if as many exist for adults. Using an assistive device such as a cane during these programs would not be allowed as it is reinforcing of the FND behaviors. Vicky markhoff (oft mentioned munchie with her own thread) has claimed that going to one of these programs was abusive and called APS on them while she was in one on her parents dime lmao. Also, if their symptoms aren’t so severe they would basically just benefit from regular cbt again focused on coping skills and functional improvement. Some folks, like the ones we see on here a lot, aren’t really going to benefit from any therapy approach though bc 1) they insist on finding a medical cause (even after ALL testing has exhausted these avenues, people will even go back to tests they’ve had done and want them repeated etc etc) 2) they don’t want to get better because they enjoy the attention more than they mind the loss of functioning. There is definitely a difference between FND and faking BUT attention as a reinforcer is major in the maintenance of both.

I love how she's into music now, she should join Dave Muscato in his next band. Though she'd probably detract attention. They could at least collaborate on an.EP about their abusive psrents- they could do those things with different singers alternating lines but trying to one up each other about who had the worst uppper middle class upbringing with every opportunity in the world.
