being more streamlined and gamey over the years
One issue there: The classic 2d ones where metal first showed up were the most gamey games ever given how they were directly building off Mario game design patterns.

Metal sonic's first appearance opens with him yoinking amy, leaving holograms of himself bullying animals in random spots just to fuck with you, and then his "bossfight" is "everything fucking stops abruptly, he fucking taunts you, and it's made extremely clear he wants a fucking race with no dialogue"
Somehow sonic "fandom" people saw this kind of shit and were like "hmmm nope he's just a scary dark robot with no personality because he's a robot sonic so he's the polar opposite of sonic!"

Even after being goomba-ified sega still gives him a clear personality whenever he shows up to some degree. even if that personality is just silently seething about sonic and trying to kill him.

DerfsonicGaming is legit the OG of gaming youtubers.
I was just linking the first clip that came up looking up "metal sonic boss" but yeah it is over a decade ago now in terms of uploads. There's some older ones too but yeah commen-FUCK WHY DID IT AUTOPLAY TO METALLIC MADNESS OST MID ME TYPING

which is ironically funny when you look at other things like the OVA. There's clearly some personal gain Metal has when interacting with Sonic but that is stripped away because he basically is his gimmick now. He's Metal Sonic and that is it with no nuance.

I already kind of brought up the OVA but yeah even though it's not canon to the games (blatantly so given it takes place on some wacked out post apocalyptic america colonizing the skies somewhere above the east coast US future) It'spretty good with fleshing out what we saw of Metal's personality in his game appearances at the time, and then sonic heroes just blatantly kind of pulled from the OVA a bit kind of in some aspects. After he got relegated back to "occasionally recurring side character/obstacle" post that game he's slowly slid into goomba mook jober territory.

That reminds me, preboot Archie had multiple metal sonics and one of them almost drowned Tails in lava.

Don't worry he became a good guy later and started boning Sally's game boy.

Yeah also during the early pre-reboot archie they kept mixing the names of metal and mecha sonic up which was more confusing given they also turned mecha sonic from sonic and knuckles into like a form normal sonic gets caught in for a while so they can have him and knuckles fight each other as cool robots.

The added marvel comics-ass greebles and gold bits combined with other inaccuracies compared to the game mecha sonic really make this one stand out.

EDIT: I forgot this was actually before the comic went super serious and still had somewhat the tone of the original gag comic it started as with just more detailed art. He literally gets introduced on the spot like "check out this cool fucking sonic variant kids"

Then he dies when another Metal Sonic self-destructed to take him out. Eggman used the MS as disposable drones, even though they absolutely are not. That's how it should be done if the thing is to be mute, but it would be too edgy for current games, I suspect.

It's weird how almost every adaptation treats metal sonic as easily replacable but int he games he's clearly just one robot that gets repaired or rebuilt whenever he gets beat too badly. The E series in sonic adventure and later robots like orbot in unleashed and orbot/cubot in the "meta era" that mouth off at him sometimes kind of showcase the general mentality robotnik has with how he treats his robots. Like yeah technically he COULD lobotomize them into personality-less husks due to them literally being robots but he doesn't. he just sends them off to do some other work if they fail him and maybe try enhancing them further with experimental ideas for shit he has. Like it's really telling in Sonic adventure how beta's still silent shaky seething autism rage over being beaten by gamma even after he's been upgraded.

orbot/cubot especially because you can't help but to ask why Eggman would make robots like them in the first place that seem to have a personality but spend it berating the guy that created him or acting stupid. I know the funny minion character is a trope but the thing is Eggman doesn't seem like he is the type to create something like that he would create something like an Omega or Gamma who will become resentful when gaining free will and realizing they were made to be disposable.

Thing is omega wasn't really disposed but rather put on guard duty for shadow's stasis pod instead of doing what he was initially made for and getting really fucking angry about it. He also mouths off in a similar manner to the other robots made by him in later games.

like this is a guy who's early robots looked like THIS that acted like little goofy goobers

I think that more than anything says the kind of guy he is in terms of robot design.

Contextually Eggman didn't see any more use for Omega besides his purpose so I would say he did find him disposable and ended up regretting it since Omega is not only still active but wants revenge. I suppose there are tiers with orbot and cubot then Sage currently being at the top, Omega and Gamma bein the midsection, and badniks being at the bottom since they're mass produced and easily taken out.

Sage in particular is interesting because the whole dynamic there is "was meant to be just a way to hack into ancient tech but then gained awareness". He goes from going "hahaha my fucking program I made is so cool I can tap into these ruins with it!" to "She's really somethign specia-wait what the fuck am i saying it's a computer program that's just saying shit" and then "I love my kid man" type shit.

Seriously the only decent writing flynn has done in fucking years IM. Frontiers being followed up with his horrible rewrite of generations really cements how different it is from his current status quo of "memba da thing? also no romance no toxic fat jokes!" shit. it's likelyt he closest we'll ever get to pre-IDW flynn again.

I can't believe it's already been four fucking years but I really ened to get around to finishing the game sometime. It's weird how the logs are chronologically out of order. I was gonna link a vid of allt he eggman audio logs you get fromt he fishing minigame but ansem reports these are not, at least in terms of ordering. Similar concept of explaining the events before the game takes place via hidden logs you can get but they apparently aren't numbered by chronological order but rather the one you unlock when fishing it out in a specific order. very odd.

i still find it kind of retarded that they decided to just make the ancients just copies of base form chaos but I choose to cope with that using the idea that's just what they're represented like via the hallucinatory flashbacks like how in Twilight princess they show a bunch of Link as a stand-in for the ancients when talking about them.

Frontiers had bad writing too, such as how the big bad is revealed right at the end and during her final boss moment rant. Or Eggman randomly stating that Amy is a strong woman.
He got worse for sure, though.

The ancients supposedly degenerated into the Chao, that's what I got. As for what's the Master Emerald and how did it attract these aliens? Screw you, wait for the next 3-4 games until/if that plot point is talked again.

Wow, classic Eggman really can carry an scene. Too bad that the writers aren't allowed to do anything else with him.

Tbf, the guy is an sociopathic robotics engineer who's used to having an army of mindless drones. He really wouldn't understand why any one of them would just revolt after he gave them an relatively important assignment

This comic's one is more based ont he DiC cartoon robotnik and behaved like the goofy PINGAS robotnik while looking like the more serious one from the other show until they eventually just made him act like the one from the serious show out of nowhere and then he died and another him came in.

They explained it away as him having backup android bodies to upload himself into iirc.
No, that was AFTER the other him replaced him. See after he died, he randomly started showing up again freaking people out. Then it was revealed it wasn't in fact a ghost or undead guy or hallucination but instead a previous alternate universe robotnik from where a universe where he won at the cost of becoming a robot himself returning after universe hopping to this one. THEN he was defeated and THEN it was revealed after HE "died" he made backup bodies for himself that looked more like the normal game robotnik.

It is perhaps the most funny, fucked up, and backasswards way of retroactively trying to make the comics visually closer to the games.

Frontiers felt like Forces but with a slightly better understanding of what it wanted to do but since it's Sega just doesn't quiet understand its end goal. It wants to be a story from the late 90s and 2000s Sonic that tries to deal with a bunch of characters, overarching themes, mysterious location, world ending threat, etc. The issue is a lot of fans are hit with the "why should I care/why should you care now." Knuckles talking about exploring his past through writing doesn't really mean much when Sega spent years gleefully portraying him as the big dumb muscle of the group. Amy's whole goal is something she was already doing as a character and indicates they don't know what to really do with her.
