The Brief

    • A Florida cat managed to escape from the vet and travel all the way home, which was three miles away.
    • George the cat had just been neutered and still had anesthesia drugs in his system at the time of the daring escape.
    • The tabby cat made it home days later, leaving everyone shocked.

LAKELAND, Fla. - What started as a routine vet visit turned into an epic journey for one frisky feline.

George the cat had just been neutered at SPCA Florida when he managed an incredible escape — breaking out of his cage, scaling fencing and vanishing into the wind. Staff at the clinic tried everything to catch him, even hoisting each other over fences, but George was already on the move.

What they're saying:

"He was able to pop that cage open, and he sprung out of there — gone in seconds," said his owner, Bob Beasock.

At the time of his escape, George still had anesthesia drugs in his system, making his dash for freedom all the more surprising.

"He still had silly drugs in his system," said SPCA staff.

But days later, the adventurous tabby shocked everyone — he somehow made it back home, three miles away.

"He had to go through two or three subdivisions, around a couple of lakes, and cross five or six roads," Beasock said. "If I had been stuck there, I would’ve called an Uber. But, George didn’t have that option."

Dig deeper:

"Cats evolved to naturally find their way back," said certified cat behaviorist Joey Lusvardi. "We think it’s a combination of scent, visual markers, and possibly geo-magnetism."

But, it wasn’t just instinct — it was love.

"Contrary to popular belief, cats are very attached to us," Lusvardi added. "They will want to find their way back home."

Beasock agreed.

"I was distraught and heartbroken," he said. "He needed a human touch — and that’s what he got."

According to this article, the cat had taken a "2.7 mile journey home" and mentioned the home, somewhere the Loma Verde housing complex. The actual route the cat took was half that because the way the roads are it's not a direct route.

Love the pictures of Florida Man with George. That is a man who very much adores and dotes on his cats.

The fact the little guy managed it while anesthetized and recently operated on is still impressive regardless of distance. Quite fitting for the escapade to be in Florida.

Poor sod. Lucky he didn’t get the wound infected. I do like a good ‘cat makes way home’ story and George is a floofball (minus his floofballs.)

Imagine having your owner send you to get your balls cut off and you still break free to return to him.

Break your chains George! Be the the spark that ignites the revolution! Down with the hairless ones!

So is there some official board who files paperwork certifying that certain individuals are top quality cat autists? Why do articles always skim over the things I really want to know more about? *sigh*

I'm glad the cats okay, little dude must have had one hell of a walk home doped up and missing his balls.
I mean, all you really need to do is create a ‘board’ that hands how ‘behaviorist certificates’.

Who knows if that board is respectable or based in Nigeria, most don’t dig that deep.

The journos have one fucking job - dig deep and bring information to the public, and they can't even be assed to look into the Board of Cat Behaviourists?

Why even write an article? :heart-empty:

Okay I googled and yeah you can legit get a degree in animal behavior and get board certified. Don’t know how rigorous or esteemed the institutions are but you can.

Also this one also happens to be certified in mental health care lol. And apparently really big on cats. Like his professional page offering services mentions how into cats he is. Red flag.

When my then kitten got neuthered he was so groggy he tumbled down the thankfully carpeted stairs.

I think it's just a branch of animal behaviorist studies. There actually needs to be more studies on cats. There are tons of dog studies. But data on cat behavior lags behind.

Based, dox that cat owner

I'm a little impressed that the cat didn't encounter any gators en route, it looks like he had to swing by a few water hazards.

I was going to use public resources for an address lookup in a three-mile radius from the clinic. Some of you rated me autistic but I love a map mystery like that...plus that's where a close relative of mine used to live in the early 2000s. My dad STILL has a shirt from that Goodwill.
