PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) — Three people, including the suspect, were fatally shot during a Rhode Island youth hockey game Monday, authorities said.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves told reporters that three other victims are hospitalized in critical condition.

“It appears that this was a targeted event, that it may be a family dispute,” she said. Goncalves did not provide details about the suspect or the ages of those who were killed, though she said it appeared that both victims were adults.

Authorities were continuing to try to piece together what happened and speak with witnesses, she said.

The shooting happened at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, a few miles outside Providence.

Outside the arena, tearful families and high school hockey players still in uniform could be seen hugging before they boarded a bus to leave the area. Roads surrounding the arena were shut down as a heavy police presence remained and helicopters flew overhead.

Pawtucket is nestled just north of Providence and right under the Massachusetts state border. A town of just under 80,000, Pawtucket had up until recently been known as the home to Hasbro’s headquarters.

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — The suspect in a Pawtucket shooting that left two people dead and three others injured Monday had a history of family disputes, some involving conflict over his gender identity, according to court records.

Robert Dorgan, 56, is accused of opening fire at a Pawtucket ice rink, killing at least two family members and injuring three others in what authorities described as a family dispute. Dorgan then shot and killed himself, according to police.

At a late-night news conference, Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves said Dorgan also went by the name “Roberta,” and court documents show his gender identity played a role in multiple family disputes over recent years.

In early 2020, Dorgan went to the North Providence Police Department and reported he had recently undergone gender-reassignment surgery and that his father-in-law wanted him out of their North Providence home because of it.

Dorgan told police that his father-in-law, who shares the same surname, threatened to “have him murdered by an Asian street gang if he did not move out of the residence,” according to court documents.

Dorgan, who said he had lived at the home for seven years, told police that the father-in-law used a derogatory term for transgender individuals to say no such person was “going to stay in my house.”

The father-in-law was charged with intimidation of witnesses and victims of crimes and obstruction of the judicial system. Prosecutors later dismissed the charges.

Around the same time, Dorgan’s then-wife Rhonda Dorgan filed for divorce. Under grounds for divorce, Rhonda initially wrote, “gender reassignment surgery, narcissistic + personality disorder traits.” Those reasons were then crossed out and replaced with “irreconcilable differences which have caused the immediate breakdown of the marriage.”


The divorce was finalized in June 2021, court records show.

Paperwork from the divorce showed Dorgan lived at the time in Jacksonville, Florida, and was working as a truck driver.

Also in 2020, Dorgan accused his mother of assaulting him and acting in a “violent, threatening or tumultuous manner,” according to police records. The mother was charged with simple assault and battery and disorderly conduct, and the case was also a point of contention in the dispute with his father-in-law.


An attorney for Dorgan’s mother did not immediately return a call for comment.


Dorgan told police his father-in-law “told me that if I did not drop the assault charges against my mother that further retaliation could be expected and that was another reason to have me killed.”


The case against his mother was also dismissed, according to court records.




In a statement Monday night, the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence described the situation as “deeply painful.”


“While details are still emerging, we know that violence within families and intimate relationships can have devastating and far-reaching impacts,” the group said. “Domestic violence does not stay behind closed doors. It affects children, extended family members, and entire communities.”

PAWTUCKET, R.I. — Police identified the shooter involved in a deadly assault inside a hockey rink in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and credited a good Samaritan for helping to stop the attack.

Three people, including the suspected gunman, are dead, and officials said three others were injured in the shooting that happened during a scheduled hockey game at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena on Andrew D. Ferland Way just before 3 p.m. Monday.

According to Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves, the shooting may have been domestic in nature, as the victims included members of the suspect's family and a family friend. Investigators believe the shooter fatally shot himself after the incident, Goncalves said.

"A good Samaritan stepped in and interjected in the scene, and that's probably what led to a swift end of this tragic event," Goncalves said.

Goncalves later said the shooter, born in 1969, was born Robert Dorgan, but also used the name Roberta and the surname Esposito.

More than one weapon was recovered from the scene, the chief also said.

A number of schools, including St. Raphael Academy, Providence Country Day School, North Providence, and North Smithfield, were participating in a Blackstone Valley Schools co-op, playing against Coventry Public Schools at the time of the shooting. One of the schools was celebrating Senior Night, which honors senior student-athletes and their families during what is usually the final game of the season.

All of the schools involved in the game confirmed that their students and players were not injured in the shooting.

A 16-year-old goalie for the Coventry team said he was on the ice when shots rang out.

"I'm overwhelmed, but trying to stay calm," he said. "You don't know what it feels like until you're in it."

In the wake of the shooting, the Rhode Island Interscholastic League announced that it was temporarily suspending all games "out of respect for the victims and to reflect upon this senseless act of violence."

A bus filled with hockey players, parents and family members who were inside the arena at the time of the shooting was taken to the Pawtucket Police Headquarters. Mayor Donald Grebien said investigators had conducted about 100 interviews in the hours after the incident.

A woman who was seen leaving the Pawtucket Police Department after the shooting told NewsCenter 5 that her father was the shooter.

"My father was the shooter," she said, without giving her name. "He shot my family, and he's dead now."

She also said, "He has mental health issues."

Later Monday evening, investigators were seen towing a white van from the parking lot outside the arena, which is located less than two miles from the Rhode Island-Massachusetts border.

The shooting happened just two months after a gunman opened fire at the Barus and Holley engineering building on the Brown University campus in Providence, killing two students.

Yeah, a huge percentage of people graduate from "amoral criminals from shitty family backgrounds with no comprehension of consequences" to "amoral criminals from shitty family backgrounds with enough impulse control to understand that they want to stay out of prison" as they reach age 27 or so. I wonder if the hormonal turmoil caused by trooning out is re-creating the age 19 mental state in some people and re-activating a lack of long-term thinking among people whose behavior can only be restrained if they remember that they will be caught.

To me it's no matter what you believe much, HRT and troonism directly is worse and means mass and random violence to children. They're all sex fiend pedos already so what's the surprise at all. Just avoid, keep armed towards them. Their general politics may or may not matter, usually left, but even based right ones are the worst.
