Arizona investigators probing the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, “TODAY” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother, said Monday they believe she was taken from her home against her will.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos previously described Guthrie’s home as a “crime scene.” She was taken “possibly in the middle of the night and that includes possible kidnapping or abduction,” his department said in a statement.

Guthrie, 84, was last seen Saturday night in her home outside Tucson. She has limited mobility and needs to take medication daily or “it could be fatal,” Nanos said.

She had no cognitive issues, and her disappearance was not linked to dementia, he added, describing her as being “of sound mind” and “sharp as a tack.”

Guthrie’s family reported her missing around noon Sunday, setting off a search-and-rescue mission that included trained personnel, drones, an airplane, a helicopter, volunteers and search-and-rescue dogs lent from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“I think she was abducted,” Nanos told NBC News. “When you’re taken from your bed and you don’t want to go somewhere, that’s an abduction.”
Nanos said officials believe Guthrie was harmed when she was taken, but they did not provide other details.

“We know she was harmed at the home, but we don’t know to what extent,” he said.

Nanos has not provided additional details about the investigation. He has said investigators “saw some things at the home that were concerning to us” but did not offer specifics.

The community was devastated by her disappearance, Nanos told NBC News.

“This is just really sad for our community,” he said. “Savannah is family to us. She’s a big part of this community. Her family is devastated, the entire family. And you know, this just doesn’t happen in Tucson.”

Nanos confirmed that law enforcement officials are reviewing video from cameras at Guthrie’s home, where she lives alone and employs staff members. He urged neighbors to “go through their Ring cameras.”

Nanos asked members of the public to contact the sheriff’s office at 520-351-4900 if they have information about the case.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said.

Guthrie is described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. Her family last saw her at home around 9:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. Saturday. She “is not in good physical health,” Nanos said.

Authorities are not aware of any threats against Savannah Guthrie, who is in Arizona. The FBI is aware of the case.

Monday’s broadcast of the “TODAY” show opened with an update on Guthrie, with co-anchor Craig Melvin calling it a “deeply personal story for us.”

In a statement reported on the air, Savannah Guthrie said in part: “I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support.”

“Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” she said in her statement. “We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at: 520-351-4900.”

Savannah Guthrie has frequently discussed her close relationship with her mother over the years.
“She loves us, her family, fiercely, and her selflessness and sacrifice for us, her steadfastness and her unmovable confidence, is the reason any of us grew up to do anything,” Savannah Guthrie said in a 2022 tribute to her mother on her 80th birthday.

In a Mother’s Day tribute on Instagram in 2024, Savannah Guthrie described her mother as “God’s first, best and most important gift to me.”

Guthrie’s father, Charles Guthrie, died when she was 16. She is one of three children.

Place your bets, now.

Placing your face directly in the path of a camera even with a mask on, was not smart. The distance between our pupils is one of the best ways AI facial recognition can be used to sort people out,

I cant find the comic panel but there s one where the red hood explains that there is no outline to his helmet by keeping it smooth, you can know who he is.

I guess a smooth face sheild woulda been better.

Also I know some paranoid people and disgruntled teachers who own a jammer, and used it once or twice at school, to fuck with the kids and their cell phones. This makes me want to hit them up and check it out with my wyze camera

Or the fact that he let Paul’s cell phone stay at the scene and that’s what ultimately lead to his conviction, IMO. Paul’s Snapchat video that he was about to send his friend showed Alex was at the kennels moments before Paul and Maggie’s cell phones ceased all activity forever…

Didn't Murdaugh spend his clients' money on being drugged off his ass all the time?

Anyway, it's sad that every random scammer is trying to get a piece of this pie.

Residents near Nancy Guthrie’s home asked to check security video from 2 dates

TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD/AZFamily/Gray News) — Tucson-area residents who live near Nancy Guthrie’s home are being asked to check security footage from two specific days in January as the investigation into her disappearance continues.

In an alert that went out to users of the Neighbors by Ring app, subscribers are asked to check their security video between 9 p.m. and midnight on Jan. 11, and between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Jan. 31—the day Guthrie was last seen. The alert notes a suspicious vehicle in the area around 10 a.m. that day.

Thursday marks day 12 of the search for Guthrie. FBI activity has increased in the area this week, with agents on Wednesday searching roadways around the Catalina Foothills. Thursday morning, federal agents set up a tent outside Guthrie’s home, blocking the front door. It was taken down about an hour later.

Nancy’s daughter, “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, posted on Instagram Thursday morning, which included a brief home video from her childhood and a message: “we will never give up on her. thank you for your prayers and hope.”

Meanwhile, authorities in Pima County say more detainments are likely as investigators work through thousands of calls and tips related to the disappearance of the 84-year-old.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos spoke with Arizona’s Family sister station KOLD Wednesday night, the day after the detainment of Carlos Palazuelos in connection to the case, saying more detainments were likely as the investigation continues.

Palazuelos was detained during a traffic stop Tuesday night in Rio Rico, Arizona, which is about 60 miles south of Tucson and just north of the Mexican border. He said he was held for hours, which Nanos confirmed. His home was searched until around 1 a.m. Wednesday, and he was released.

Palazuelos said the FBI told him he was questioned because a tip was called in saying he looked similar to the suspect seen in surveillance camera footage taken outside Nancy Guthrie’s home on Jan. 31, the morning of her disappearance.

On Tuesday, federal investigators released the footage, which shows an armed individual tampering with the camera on Nancy Guthrie’s front door. The video shows the suspect, wearing a ski mask and gloves, walking slowly to the front porch.

After he was released, Palazuelos talked with KOLD about his detainment. He claimed he didn’t know why it happened and said he just wanted to clear his name.

“Something I didn’t do,” he said. “I know it’s their job to do what they are doing but to an innocent man? I think they don’t even have evidence against me, so I don’t even know how they got to me.”

Nanos said there were more factors leading to Palazuelos’ detainment than just a tip but could not expand on them. He said no one, including Palazuelos, has been ruled out as part of the investigation.

The sheriff’s department confirmed earlier Wednesday that black gloves found in Nancy Guthrie’s neighborhood are being tested for DNA. Nanos also said digital forensic teams have been examining and processing every piece of electronic evidence, including cell tower data.

On Tuesday, Savannah Guthrie shared the surveillance footage released by investigators on her social media, asking anyone with information to call law enforcement.

“We believe she is still alive,” she wrote of her mother. ”Bring her home."

Detainment process
Andy Black, a former FBI assistant special agent in charge in Tucson, provided insight into the detainment process after Palazuelos was questioned and released.

“Generally, they find as much about an individual of interest as possible and their associates as well,” he said. “So, when they rolled up on this residence and executed a search warrant, they had a pretty good idea of who might be there and what they might find.”

Black said a magistrate would not sign off on a search warrant based solely on physical appearance.

“I do not believe a magistrate would sign off on a search warrant to enter someone’s residence and conduct a search based on eyebrows and a mustache,” Black said. “I think there must be more evidence if that’s what they were looking for, tying this location to the Guthrie investigation.

“Someone probably did provide that information. It seems rather flimsy to make a case on, but the sheriff’s department and the FBI have kept a lot of the evidence close to their vest as they should. So, I suspect there’s much more information that was involved in detaining him for that length of time.”

Regarding Palazuelos’ release, Black said it’s possible that investigators now “have another avenue of leads to pursue.”

“This doesn’t necessarily mean the FBI has moved away from this individual,” Black said. “But it does indicate that they don’t have enough to arrest or detain further.”

Please explain to me how using a 100% traceable currency is smart. Crypto is the least private currancy to ever exist. That's the whole point of it.
yeah if you just use straight bitcoin then it's even easier to trace than a bank transfer or credit card payment. you have to go through proxies, strawman wallets, and mixer services to obfuscate it.

I don’t know the typical profile of someone who does this when it’s not cartel-related and I’m not sure there is one, because outside of the cartels, so few do it.
it almost never happens for good reasons.
abducting someone is a pretty complicated and difficult crime to pull off. the kidnapping itself is difficult to carry out without alerting anyone, then you need some safehouse to hold the target, you need guys to care for and watch over the prisoner at all times, it must be safe against escape attempts and also safe against drawing outside attention. you need to figure out how to communicate with the family without giving away any information that could compromise you, and you need to figure out a way to receive the ransom payment safely without revealing anything that could be used to trace you, all while the cops are watching the family extremely closely and actively trying to track you down.
and even if you receive payment, you're still stuck with some problems. do you let the victim go? then that's a loose end that could potentially help the cops in tracking you down.
or do you kill the victim? then you're now wanted for murder, which means the cops will keep looking for you with even more intensity.

to pull this all off you need a team of several people who are all competent and trustworthy and can commit a lot of time to this operation without raising any suspicion.

it's a huge headache, extremely difficult to do successfully, opsec requirements through the roof.
if you have the criminal resources to attempt something like this in the first place, there's a lot of other potential crimes you could commit instead that would be easier, safer, and more profitable (drug trafficking, robbing stores, robbing homes, maybe even robbing banks)

Video of a guy trying to break into the gate of a house 5 miles from Grandma Guthrie's house on the day that Grandma Guthrie was kidnapped.

Edit: I say similar tactics. Same gang. Maybe my Venezuelan prediction will come true.

The people who used to plan professional kidnappings for ransom in prior generations are the kinds of more competent criminals who're now doing drug running, money laundering or robbing commercial transport. There are supposedly more robberies of tractor trailers loads of commercial shipments than are reported by the media.

When kidnapping for ransom was more popular in Latin America, they'd hire low-level thugs to hold the hostages. There were tons of cases were the holding crew accidentally killed the hostages through various retarded accidents or blabbed to friends who ratted them out for cash rewards. The kidnapping gangs would've used more competent people if they had them.

There are still kidnappings in those countries. You can buy kidnapping insurance and it's common to buy with major business executives. But there are far fewer kidnappings than there used to be due to how easy it is to get caught.
Maybe my Venezuelan prediction will come true.
I wonder how many fence-sitting suburban women would switch to a harder line on immigration if that happens. The Today show is very popular with the kind of women who aren't that into politics. True-crime is a huge entertainment category for women and this case is being followed closely by them.

I've never watched morning shows and I don't watch/read true crime, but I'm following this case because it's so interesting. It's like some bad Lifetime movie.

Not quite as fun but much cheaper and easier: Years ago I taught a foreign language class to little kids once a week. One day I was just getting started with the lesson when alarms started going off all around me. The children had mini timers for running spelling drills with one another and they’d all set their alarms to go off a few minutes into class. The little timers were hidden in bookshelves, under chairs, inside desks, in the heating unit, everywhere. I was happy to be subjected to such a disruptive yet wholesome prank.
That is a beautiful thing. Thanks for the story. DAE remember when anecdotes like this were gifts?

@Clotso Coof So what I am hearing, is that if we want to change the white woman's acceptance of mass immigration, we need to get the true crime genera to pump out more videos about women and minors getting killed. Best idea I have heard in a long time. We could also focus on trannies committing murders and we could double duty this thing.

Gen X and Boomers are the crowds that really seem to care past casual interest and a majority of both groups are too retarded to care about more than the potential of themselves or their parents being kidnapped which is hilariously unlikely but still pushing them to order Ring doorbells en masse.
So, an 84 year old woman got murdered, and it was an ADVERT?
WHIT?
Aye, sounds about right

Bill Hicks gets more correct with every passing year, their methods just get more surreptitious

nah
true crime fans want content about dark, brooding, mysterious white men committing crimes of passion
illegals and browns doing professional criminal things doesn't interest them

TMZ has emerged as the go-to place for breaking news on all things Nancy Guthrie.

In the last 24 hours or so, they've found a glove and ski mask. They've identified the backpack the man as wearing as a Walmart Ozarks trail backpack.

Last night I had a stream by IckedMel on playing in the background. They were looking at Ring Nest camera videos posted in Nancy Guthrie's area by her neighbors and found a video of a similar man trying to break into a yard near Nancy Guthrie's house on the same night she was taken.
TMZ says the same thing.

Edit: NBC is reporting that the similar-looking backyard prowler near Nancy Guthrie's neighbor's house has been cleared.

Apparently the local sheriff sent some evidence off to a private lab in Florida, instead of the FBI crime lab.

Dumb shit, but probably doesn't trust the jeet running the Bureau if I had to guess.
Yeah, Nanos is arguing with the FBI about whether they should use the FBI's labs at Quantico or private labs.

The locals seem to really hate him. There's his terrible press conference performances, then he took a night off to go to a basketball game when everyone thought he should be there, and he's never visited the crime scene. He's also not securing the crime scene very well today, all kinds of people have been just wandering up to Nancy Guthrie's house.

I suppose if one were to go looking for a silver lining in this tragedy that it would be "the surveillance state is not as omnipotent as often stated". Maybe it's because the cameras aren't actually omnipresent, that they're still too shitty to be useful, that the people in charge of it are all bought and paid for or drooling imbeciles, or some combination of the above and/or other reasons. They might still get their man, but it'll be down to actual hard police work if they do, like it was before the digital panopticon.

Of course, maybe the cops are just keeping their cards close to their chests, god knows it's the right move, but, this is a high profile sensational crime against well-connected people. I hope the lady lives through this, but I agree that the longer this goes on the more that slim hope vanishes.

There’s still time for Othram Labs or one of the other creepy forensic genealogy places to bail out the keystone cops. Effectively collecting everyone’s DNA without their consent under the guise of being interested in their family tree is as surveillance state as it gets. Didn’t matter if someone didn’t consent because all it takes is one close relative like a cousin or uncle submitting a sample.

Plot twist: they kidnapped this grandma to steal her family DNA

New guy found on a ring camera 6 miles away from Grandma Guthrie's home. I think we have a winner.

Facial features match what little we have from the Guthrie abductor. And what really nails it is his incredibly weird behavior around the ring camera.

Hispanic?

Based off of what this guy said down below, I have to wonder if the perp is homeless, if not for the need to have a car to get Guthrie out of there. Maybe he got suckered in by a gang with a car/van/truck to do the dirty work with the risk of getting caught.
