Arizona investigators probing the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, “TODAY” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother, said Monday they believe she was taken from her home against her will.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos previously described Guthrie’s home as a “crime scene.” She was taken “possibly in the middle of the night and that includes possible kidnapping or abduction,” his department said in a statement.

Guthrie, 84, was last seen Saturday night in her home outside Tucson. She has limited mobility and needs to take medication daily or “it could be fatal,” Nanos said.

She had no cognitive issues, and her disappearance was not linked to dementia, he added, describing her as being “of sound mind” and “sharp as a tack.”

Guthrie’s family reported her missing around noon Sunday, setting off a search-and-rescue mission that included trained personnel, drones, an airplane, a helicopter, volunteers and search-and-rescue dogs lent from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“I think she was abducted,” Nanos told NBC News. “When you’re taken from your bed and you don’t want to go somewhere, that’s an abduction.”
Nanos said officials believe Guthrie was harmed when she was taken, but they did not provide other details.

“We know she was harmed at the home, but we don’t know to what extent,” he said.

Nanos has not provided additional details about the investigation. He has said investigators “saw some things at the home that were concerning to us” but did not offer specifics.

The community was devastated by her disappearance, Nanos told NBC News.

“This is just really sad for our community,” he said. “Savannah is family to us. She’s a big part of this community. Her family is devastated, the entire family. And you know, this just doesn’t happen in Tucson.”

Nanos confirmed that law enforcement officials are reviewing video from cameras at Guthrie’s home, where she lives alone and employs staff members. He urged neighbors to “go through their Ring cameras.”

Nanos asked members of the public to contact the sheriff’s office at 520-351-4900 if they have information about the case.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said.

Guthrie is described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. Her family last saw her at home around 9:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. Saturday. She “is not in good physical health,” Nanos said.

Authorities are not aware of any threats against Savannah Guthrie, who is in Arizona. The FBI is aware of the case.

Monday’s broadcast of the “TODAY” show opened with an update on Guthrie, with co-anchor Craig Melvin calling it a “deeply personal story for us.”

In a statement reported on the air, Savannah Guthrie said in part: “I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support.”

“Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” she said in her statement. “We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at: 520-351-4900.”

Savannah Guthrie has frequently discussed her close relationship with her mother over the years.
“She loves us, her family, fiercely, and her selflessness and sacrifice for us, her steadfastness and her unmovable confidence, is the reason any of us grew up to do anything,” Savannah Guthrie said in a 2022 tribute to her mother on her 80th birthday.

In a Mother’s Day tribute on Instagram in 2024, Savannah Guthrie described her mother as “God’s first, best and most important gift to me.”

Guthrie’s father, Charles Guthrie, died when she was 16. She is one of three children.

Place your bets, now.

I find it extremely strange that he was prepared enough to have a
1. Mask
2 . Backpack
3. Gloves

And the dressings of a somewhat prepared robber/kidnapper.But for some reason, he was entirely unprepared for the ring camera(very common these days btw).........
how unique are mouth guards with led lights? doesn't look like a pen light

I think this will end up being some Fargo style crime caper that was spearheaded by Tamasso.

There really is no information about Tamasso out there. He’s like a magical Italian leprechaun that magically appeared in Tuscan in 2006.

I think it was reported he (or Annie) worked as a school teacher? But I’ve not seen that authenticated anywhere so idk if it’s true or not. His says on SM he likes playing in local rock bands, writing when the mood strikes and lizards. Annie is a “writer”. So at best it seems like there might have been one teacher salary, maybe some extra cash from playing gigs with his band and…..that’s it. So how do they afford a nice home in Tuscan?

(And let’s be honest from we can tell about Tamasso’s band it’s grown man hobby band. They usually spend far more having a band than they make playing gigs. It was mentioned one band member was a lawyer. If resemble other such bands, it’s usually half or 3/4 of the band are adults with real jobs and the others are broke musician types that lives off their girlfriend’s who has a real job.)

From what information is available, it doesn’t seem like careers and employment were central to their lives and therefore Id assume the spending money, trips and the home they posted on SM were thanks to Nancy, and probably Savannah too. The couple seemed beholden to wealthy relatives for a lot in their lives. They were not living a lifestyle that matched with being underemployed artsy types.

Ironically being charitable to relatives can cause resentment to fester, esp if the charity has been a long term and ongoing thing. By the same token generous relatives can get tired of subsidizing their poor relations and tighten their purse strings and that can usually spur some ugly shit to go down.

One guy coming into the the house? I don't think this was a planned kidnapping. At best he had an escape driver at the ready. In fact, he probably had a driver because it would be too hard to keep her under control unless she was dead, unconscious or in the trunk.

I think he was just planning on robbing the house and got surprised that someone was home. Smash & grab, then run out. Things went bad when he ran into her. Did she see him without his mask on? Did he take it off when he got inside? Did she rip it off? Did she not comply when asked for the vault/jewelry/cash/silver.

When the robbery went sideways, he probably had a nigger moment. Maybe he killed her and didn't want the body left there for evidence. Maybe he thought he could drive her around to ATM and force her to pull out cash.

I think he has a thin mask covering his eyebrows under this ski mask. I just see his eyeholes.

What is the best guess on race? I think his body build, ways of moving, lips & mustache is all we can get from him because the eyes have an additional covering.

Edit:
* Luchador mask under the ski mask? Zorro style mask under the ski mask?
* His clothes look bulky. Maybe he has two layers to pull one layer off after the robbery.
* Would a black man have sneakers like that? Maybe Hispanic.
* Black man lips and mouth shading?

I am going to throw my guess out there: Venezuelan robbery gang member.

How many old ladies will buy home security systems after seeing this footage? Phones will be ringing off the hook for the next few days at every security company in Tucson and beyond.

I wonder if Annie and the wop we're in charge of driving Nancy around town, taking her to doctors appointments, checking in with her constantly...they said she can't walk more than 50 feet by herself and needs a walker to do that. She needed increasing amount of caretaking.

It can be really stressful dealing with an "independent" senior who won't accept they're not really independent anymore. They keep living in a big house when they should be in a handicapped accessible apartment or an assisted living facility. Relatives have to worry about them constantly and start to resent the unnecessary stress. Add that to general family strife and it gets bad.

I disagree. Most home robberies occur during daylight hours.

If you’re going to rob a place, coming in at night guarantees someone is home. (Unless they’re on vacation - but I don’t see any indication she had been on holiday just before the abduction.)

If it was a robbery gone wrong, leaving the body where it is creates LESS evidence. (You don’t want a dead body in your car.)

Nothing of value was stolen either - if it was a robbery, you’d think they would’ve grabbed what they could’ve on the way out.

Anyway, the backpack probably is holding zip ties. The gun is for the confrontation. He is going in there knowing she is home alone.

He seems to know what he’s doing - especially approaching the house looking down and walking oddly.

Sure. I bet they did do a lot for Nancy but Nancy had also been doing a lot for them. Nancy might have sort of viewed them as paid helpers with very good reason.

I’d assume Tomasso and Annie’s home and vacays were thanks to “helping mom” out. Savannah might have even literally paid them and/or given them lavish trips “for helping mom since I’m in NY” and I’m sure Nancy was the reason they lived in the home they did.

But, Nancy was still going strong at 84. She might have lived another decade or more but she would definitely need lots more help and assistance in the coming years. Tomasso and Annie might have to really work for that extra money if she was ill. If she was dead they just get all her money and don’t have to do a damn thing anymore:

Well now their biggest lead is going to be traffic cameras, which will take forever to comb through.

Was it established she had hired help for cleaning or landscaping? Dude looks like an old supervisor of mine, who was a "reformed" Blood with grills.

Hail Mary Hypothesis: Samantha didn't get kidnapped. Injured and bleeding, she made a run for it. Dazed, confused and weak she made it to some point in the trees, a ditch, or the back door or shrubbery of a neighbor. She didn't survive the night, or was not lucid into the morning.

A professional kidnapper would not be grabbing flowers from the yard to cover the camera.
Even in breaking bad, they used spray paint to cover the cameras.

Right now, this looks amateurish to me. The guy is smart enough to dress in layers to disguise his shape and face, but at the same time didn't think of what would happen if he encountered a camera.

Oh the security footage reminds me of this case from some time ago...it showed a woman on a camera with an umbrella (?) trying to break into a celebrity woman's house. She kinda looked like a cross between Asian Shannon Doherty and bjork. I just remember the footage of her was creepy because of that eye glow that reflects on the camera.

I’ve read so many “Maybe she just got hurt and wandered off!” Comments. Totally ignoring the nest camera that was unscrewed off the wall.

Now maybe they’ll stop speculating she just hobbled off on her own.
She obviously got hurt and wandered off after the guy disabled her cameras.
-Someone on reddit, probably.
