For sure, but the only other thing he could have said was "Trust me, Tom is gonna drop a vid proving everything wrong just wait and see" which would have probably looked bad on all involved, even if it was actually true. I think the question is whether or not he would have been sweeping had tom not been able to prove his innocence.

I think you can argue that the best thing to do would be to just cut contact with tom until he responded, but I personally won't complain that he didn't because I know I wouldn't have done that in his shoes.

It does seem like Ellie is playing ball with him considering he got her to corroborate that they didn't do ageplay. Explains why she stopped sharing info, probably picked Tom's side and went back to hide in the hole she's been in for a few years. Really wouldn't expect anything else from that avenue, she's already terrified of the drama she's been in with exes and there's no way she'll willingly put herself in a spot to get litigated over ageplay pedo shit.
