Obviously Tom could have tweeted something, but it had hardly spread to twitter, be probably should have just commented on one of the early youtube videos.

Given that they made some verifiably false claims and that he has her on audio saying she was planning to blackmail him, he probably has a good case, even with actual malice. The thing is that she is too poor to be worth suing for money, so it would only happen if he wanted to force a retraction.

Point is, it's better to step back and prepare your responses and approach. I don't disagree that it would have probably been better to come out straight away with a denial, but as a public figure I understand why he would wait to formulate a response. He would have people around him advising him also (although I don't know if his poor choice of woman extends to his social circle). If that's not what you were saying, that's fine, but too many people are desperate to believe this woman.
