Precious metals are generally considered a hedge against economic uncertainty as they retain their value well and have inherent uses. Their value is still governed, however, by supply and demand. Supply remains fairly static but demand has gone to the moon due to institutional investors often acting on behalf of governments) to purchase gold, silver and platinum to hedge their USD reserves

also silver in particular I've heard is a sweet spot for people to buy compared to the high price of buying gold and the low value of other metals
