Yeah, and out of that very maximalist set of redesigns, I think some of the more simple ones (Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy) look better than the more complex ones (AJ, Twilight, Pinkie Pie.) Rarity and Fluttershy are probably the best, they look like illustrations for the front of a doll's packaging (so it only has to be drawn once and can be more complex,) but Pinkie's is so cluttered it's hard to see there's a horse under there.

Are you sure that "non-binary" isn't just a localization thing? American localization of Nintendo games has always pissed me off. I could see the Tomodachi dating thing being "No preference" or "Either" in the Japanese text. The US localization team prob jumped at the opportunity to shoehorn cringe LGBT shit.
Just speculating. Bar the games being bad by their own merit, sometimes the localization has made me drop titles because it comes off as malicious.

I found the Japanese version of the Direct and got a screenshot of what seems to be the same prompts.
According to Google, it indeed seems to say "Other".
Not sure what the function is behind that option in the Japanese version but yeah the localization team are...being their typical selves.

What also irks me is how many people argue for localization in bad faith. Like a line could be translated as something fundamentally different than the original meaning, totally distinct in function and tone, and you'll still get dipshits pulling out good ol' "there's no such thing as a direct translation." or "はい can be translated a few different ways, therefore all of translation is just vibes and creative liberties."
You'd think if you were a fan of a product, you'd want the most unadulterated, authentic version of it, right? Like nu Fire Emblem fans will go on and on about how much they love

In their defense, North Sentinel Island is owned by India. After a couple jeets washed ashore on my isolated tribe's island I'd also decide to do without the rest of humanity, based on that unbalanced sample. Plus they had contact with the Br*tish originally, which also isn't exactly putting our best foot forward.
