Wasn't that kid from Cuba too? Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't America have a policy where once Cuban illegals hit American soil they were allowed to stay in America?
I'm pretty sure that was the case, otherwise Miami has a LOT of fucking explaining to do.

So he was being deported because he was caught in a custody dispute between his family in the US and his family in Cuba

On November 21, 1999, Elián's mother, her partner, and Elián fled Cuba by boat as part of a group of refugees attempting to reach the United States. The boat sank during the journey, and Elián's mother, along with most of the passengers, drowned. Elián was found floating on an inner tube and rescued by two fishermen, who turned him over to the U.S. Coast Guard. Elián was taken to a hospital and treated for dehydration and minor cuts. In addition to Elián, a young couple survived and reached shore separately.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) granted Elián temporary permission to stay in the U.S. and placed him with his great-uncle, Lázaro González, in Miami. His great-uncle wanted Elián to remain in the country, while his father, Juan Miguel González, sought his return to Cuba. This led to a high-profile and protracted custody battle involving his father, his Miami relatives, and U.S. and Cuban officials. Elián was returned to his father's custody after an INS raid on his Miami relatives' home on April 22, 2000. They returned to Cuba when the legal dispute concluded on June 28, 2000.

This really is the system of government we chose, and despite frustrating moments like this, it is crucial to keep it this way. Jury nullification is alive in 2026 and that is a beautiful thing.

Just remember this when some Dem tries prosecuting the V2 batch of J6ers.

"Dry foot policy," the news used to call it. (I heard "one dry foot" more often irl.) Any Cuban who kinda made it out of the water was a de facto instant American, given an expedited asylum process, etc. Obama ended it to punish the Cubans for being Republicans.

"Dry foot" was half the Republican argument against the fed raid, which apparently Janet Reno (psycho killer Attorney General who looked like a troon) launched contrary to Clinton's orders. Once done he had to own it, and it may have cost Gore the next election.

We don't really have laws.
