What I think happened was that he "quit" normal porn consumption. But his brain was so trained on porn that he couldn't finish without it. So then he made his own makeshift porn to continue his addiction. This is also not to mention he still probably watched softcore porn all the time

He didn't quit, if you have to jack off to sex tapes of yourself then that's still porn but even aside from that, I doubt he stopped watching porn at all.
