I had at one point discounted this but it does seem to be the case. I assume this is why trumps vision of American foreign policy has changed since even a year ago.
For their population to grow from 500 million to 1.4 billion since 1950, they would have had to maintain a total fertility rate per female of 5+ for the low development period of like 1950-2000, and instead they had The Great Leap Forward in the late 50’s/mid 60’s, with massive famines, and The Cultural Revolution, from the mid 60’s to the mid 70’s, with massive murder.
It's been a couple years since i dug into this, but ~10-13% of the German auto industry's sales are in the US, but only ~4-6% of the vehicles are built here (not accounting for components from the EU that are then used in the US cars). So the current tariff threat, on the German auto industry alone, is 10% (later 25%) on a current sales volume of ~800k -1 million cars, valued at like $35 BILLION.
