>instead of using warp drives like in star trek they open up portals to hell, cover the (somehow shorter) distance IN HELL and break back into reality

What is this, Minecraft?
Isn't that basically what they did in Event Horizon?

Yes and 40k fans joke about the movie being a prequel set at the very start of the Dark Age of Technology.

It's also how Nightcrawler works in X-Men (sometimes). I wonder where the idea first originated.

I think there is a Stephen King short that has the idea on it from the 1970s but I am sure it is older than that.

The twist of The Jaunt is that it is, in fact, the opposite: teleportation technology requires traveling through a larger space for a much larger amount of time, but because it is instantaneous from the perspective of reality and because it perfectly preserves whatever passes through in whatever state it is sent in it is resolved by simply putting people to sleep.

Interestingly, it in itself is semi-based on the teleportation in The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester, though in that book the ability is a casual one any person can do by simply picturing in his mind his current position, his destination, and the space interim. This results in most physical security measures for those who can afford them rendered moot, being replaced with labyrinthine structures whose layouts are kept as dread secrets. It’s pretty good and you can see it’s influence in just about any of King’s more sci-fi endeavors.
