Late and has already been somewhat explained but those that say "stunted development" aren't too far off. It's a mixture of the old crowd of smash players "suddenly having an epiphany" (i.e. not virtue signaling effected their bottom line) and letting the scene get run over by the most annoying attention seekers to be conceived from a FGC as well as enabling the same retards who were already ruining it (i.e. Leffen, Mang0, etc. etc.) because they were all that was left after PPMD, M2K, and Armada left. Then the new crowd of an entirely different breed of manchildren grown up in the "progressive" age of the internet that pushed troon, gay, anti-racist, feminist shit down everyone's throat and they were gullible enough to take the bait either for attention/clout, fetish development (from the EPI garbage pushed by social media), or white guilt for the full osmosis process.

I think it also bears mentioning that Slippi making Melee more accessible aligned perfectly with the start of Covid lockdown (it released in June 2020 IIRC) in a way that granted a new hobby to a people who suddenly had a lot more time. Not only that, in terms of its mechanical structure and the nature of its tech, Melee is the fighting game that's conceptually closest to speedrunning, and we all know the disproportionate demographic appeal of speedrunning to people of gender.

All that together just happened to make it an especially good funnel for those people at that time, IMO.

For a lot of these retards, it was the first game they ever played and they drove that nostalgia headfirst into obsessive autism and compulsive grinding to become "the best" in what is ultimately a fruitless endeavor.

Side tangent, but for a while I was half-and-half considering trying to get into speedrunning. But the basement dwelling and barely get by in life was a huge turn-off. One of the most memorable moments was there is/was a Final Fantasy spedrunner who'd have a massive fucking ego about how to do things, and would argue/fight/ban people from simply asking questions. They weren't small, and averaged a couple hundred viewers every stream, and always had new people showing up. But there was one time I remember, where a viewer asked how they manage to stay skinny while playing videogames 12-16 hours a day. Dude pretty much admitted he's so poor, there are times he'd go a week or two with little to no food. From what I could tell, he lived alone and made no comments about people in real life. He had no epiphany or anything about people showing up to watch or subscribe (giving him money); despite living that poorly, he'd get fucking mean about how to do things in FF7 and FF9. Never made any claims about anxiety or medical conditions either; so dude would just play the same game for days on end doing the same shit every day, then get into slap-fights over simple questions.

Videogames and streaming/youtube, in any capacity should be a side thing to a real job. Then, if/when you get big, you can move into something you're more passionate about; but no one does that, it's why we have people like Chibi and CosmoWright and others trainwrecks.

I came across something interesting earlier and I haven't seen a write up for this guy in this thread, or anyone really talk about him. He's got quite a reputation and history within the community, so I will attempt to do one myself.

Do you remember False? False was a Brawl player who came to prominence during the Smash 4 era through high tournament placings and content creation with his friend, Keitaro. He was moderately famous in the scene, and did well enough to place top 10 at EVO 2017. Most notably, he took on a project to produce the Brawl equivalent of the Melee documentary, opening a Kickstarter to crowdfund it. This raised almost $10k from the community.



False's goodwill had gradually dwindled over the years due to a lack of meaningful updates on the documentary, in addition to a very strange manner of posting on his personal social media accounts. In 2019, people from an esports organization he tried to form called Team Zenma came forward to detail their experiences with him. He is described by the many contributors to this document as abusive and he frequently used intimidation tactics to get what he wanted. Some choice screenshots are below, but I recommend combing through the document to get a good understanding of just how unhinged False was behind closed doors. A local copy is attached to this post.

In regards to the "private account" mentioned throughout the document, the Zenma members discovered that False had a secret Twitter where he would post his ramblings to nobody (funny opsec fail aside: it was discovered because he linked his personal phone number to the account). The posts on this account would be even more unhinged - threats to kill in all caps, cartoonish villain monologues, airing personal grievances and wishing harm upon others, etc. More choice screenshots are below. In addition to this, former roommates of False also came forward with their own stories. One story involved False assaulting a friend of the roommates at a party and another roommate openly discussing how they did not want to live with him anymore (A).



These actions were ultimately what led to many within the community to distance themselves from False.

Fast forward to the Great Purge of Summer 2020. Keitaro was ousted from the community after admitting to statutory rape in a Twitlonger, and many other top players and figures within the community were being exposed as sex pests and generally repulsive human beings. Check out this extensive list by @REGENDarySumanai that details the colorful cast of characters involved in that - you might recognize a name on there! False, unsurprisingly, would also be named as one of them: his ex-girlfriend came out with her own story about the mental and domestic abuse she went through as a result of being in a relationship with False and living together with him. False would gain even further notoriety when, instead of addressing his ex-girlfriend's allegations, he posted a faked Smash Ultimate combo clip of Donkey Kong just a few days later. This resulted in the combo clip becoming a meme within the community to mock him.

This would be the final nail in False's coffin - he was placed on a community ban list and banned from every major tournament in the tri-state area. This cascaded into a ban at every major tournament in the nation.

As for the Brawl documentary, it would never be made. After over 3 years since the prior update, False finally acknowledged in a final Kickstarter update that the project would not be completed. The community was effectively scammed out of thousands of dollars. Rumors have circulated for years that False spent either a majority or all of the money raised from the Kickstarter on weed, but they have never been corroborated. He promised in his final update to release all the archival footage he recorded to the community, but has yet to release this footage to this day.



So, why a write up on this guy in particular when he's been banned from the community for years?

Well apparently, False is now homeless with a lengthy rap sheet.

A Facebook post (A) from an independent journalist details that False has been arrested 8 times within a spin of 6 months. His previous charges include trespassing, harassment, violating a domestic violence restraining order, public lewdness observed by others, and false threats of impending disaster. His latest escapades involved getting caught sleeping in a town hall building and told to leave. He later returned, threatened to blow up the building, and then ran into the bathroom, after which he was arrested and booked in jail.

False is apparently a known figure in the area, and some people have commented on the post with personal accounts of their experiences with him. Noteworthy ones include someone giving him food and cigarettes outside of a 7-Eleven but remarking they "knew he was off", another person being aggressively asked for money to "get back home" and lying about his name before begging to buy him cigarettes, and an Amazon Fresh worker complaining about him being a general nuisance, often catching him stealing food and sleeping in the back of the store.



After this revelation picked up some traction, Keitaro showed a sign of life... by attempting to snake his former friend. No honor among ousted Smash players!



A commenter was quick to remind him of his own skeletons in his closet.
