A federal agent shot and killed a Minneapolis motorist when she allegedly tried to run over law enforcement officers during an immigration crackdown in the city, authorities said Wednesday.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot the woman in her vehicle in a residential neighborhood in Minneapolis, Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.

Video posted online showed the vehicle crashed in a residential neighborhood. The shooting drew throngs of angry protesters to the scene in an area that is the latest target of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.

There was a large presence of federal and local officers, yellow police tape and cars that had been in a crash in the residential neighborhood. Gregory Bovino, a senior U.S. Customs and Border Patrol official who has been the face of crackdowns in Los Angeles, Chicago and elsewhere, was among the group.

“We are aware of a shooting involving federal law enforcement near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue. Please avoid this area,” the city government said on X.

In a scene similar to the Los Angeles and Chicago crackdowns, bystanders didn't hold back in venting their anger, blowing whistles, taunting the federal agents.

“Shame! Shame! Shame!” and “ICE out of Minnesota!” they loudly chanted from behind the police tape, referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

After the shooting, Mayor Jacob Frey said immigration agents were “causing chaos in our city.”

“We are demanding ICE leave the city and state immediately. We stand rock solid with our immigrant and refugee communities," Frey said on social media.

The area where the shooting occurred is a modest neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis, just a few blocks from some of the oldest immigrant markets in the area and a mile from where George Floyd was killed by police in 2020.

“We’ve been trying to live life as fully as possible in light of the fear and anxiety that we feel,” said the Rev. Hierald Osorto, pastor at St. Paul’s-San Pablo Lutheran Church, which has a predominantly Latino congregation in the area.

The Immigration Defense Network, a coalition of groups serving immigrants in Minnesota, held a training session Tuesday night for about 100 people who are willing to hit the streets to monitor the federal enforcement.

“I feel like I'm an ordinary person, and I have the ability do something so I need to do it,” Mary Moran told KMSP-TV.

The Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday that it had launched an extraordinary immigration enforcement operation, with 2,000 agents and officers expected in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area for a crackdown tied in part to allegations of fraud involving Somali residents.

CNN has spent all day trying to pretend minor demonstrations by the usual suspects into some great act of public outrage. They keep talking about "clashes" while they show people standing around. The current one they are showing is a small group of nearly all white people standing around outside a parking lot. The CNN reporter was explaining how if the crowd started blowing their whistles, that would be a sign of real trouble coming. The reporter was also worried that federal law enforcement only had the parking gates between them and these "angry" protesters.

And a note on geography. The protests CNN is mostly showing are happening outside a federal building way south of Minneapolis near the airport along the Mississippi River in kind of a nowhere zone. One of the biggest problems protesters will face in that area is probably parking.

It isn't a formal designation, but is just a term for anyone who is there specifically to be a witness or assist lawyers retained by the protesters. They're generally supposed to wear some kind of identification and NOT participate in any way in the actual actions.

When done properly, it's a First Amendment protected activity and cops arresting them would be subject to a 1983 action.

It is not, however, a license to go around committing crimes yourself. At that point you are not an observer, you are a participant.

It sets up a jurisdictional clash. Minnesota will try to prosecute Ross in spite of him being a Fed, and thus being protected by qualified immunity and the Supremacy Clause.

And it would be IMMEDIATELY removed to federal court under 28 U.S.C. § 1442 (the Federal Officer Removal Statute). If Minnesota resisted this, it would be an act of insurrection and everything up to sending federal troops to stop any illegal attempt to do this would be justified.

Well yea obviously fuck her and I couldn't care less that she died, but in my attempt to be a moral person along with my religious beliefs, the ideal outcome here would have been that she didn't show up there, that she would have just followed ICE's orders, and that ultimately she realized that her ideology was fucking evil and she eventually became a better person.

That being said wishing things went differently for our benefit and goals isn't the same as counter signaling or walking back our beliefs just because shit got real.
I wish things didn't have to go that way, but they did, and her death is the result, so there is no point in trying to figure out how to better accommodate the goals of people who are antithetical to us.
We shouldn't make things more fair for people who would run over our people, even on accident.
The goal should be to maintain frame and reinforce that you don't get to throw your life away in an attempt to slow us down.

She didn't hit anyone; the killer easily moved out of the way, and the car wasn't going to run him over. It was unnecessary force.
