I hate these fishtank cases. I like my case i got from Cougar, the MX330-G Pro. Comes with a 5.25 inch slot for a disc drive, front is mesh for fans, and has a USB C connector. You don't need all this extra shit with less functionality than a case from a budget brand.
cool, i saw a offer for a cougar Archon 1, will need to see if it's not rusted to hell and back.

it is funny seeing these relics now and compare them to shitty fishtank cases that are far more expensive than them and have LESS stuff to make them actually decent, not to mention glass panes, holy shit, i prefer acryllic because it's lighter.

Cougar is in the sweet spot of functionality and price, and i pray every day that the Youtuber vultures never make them mainstream, because that will break Cougar's business model of being cheap and good when they inevitably jack up the price due to Youtubers hyping up their cases. Yeah that case you showed looks like a great server case, easily could put a blu ray drive in there and make it a media server or something with all the drive space.

I have the acrylic panel MX330 and its served me well, if I knew they had the plastic side panel would've sprung for that though.
I've been meaning to see if I could get an HDD caddy that fits the front 5.25 drive bay, I thought about sticking a blu ray drive just to larp but I actually don't have a use case for discs anymore :(

I miss cases that look like this. That thing SCREAMS mid 2000s, early 2010s.

It's claimed to be 72 GB on the 512-bit bus. Is it actually 384-bit, or a mix of 2 GB and 3 GB modules?

AMD EXPO 1.2 could supercharge Ryzen CPUs with CUDIMM support amid global DRAM crunch — full AMD CUDIMM support is on the horizon
Although AMD's AM5 platform is physically compatible with CUDIMMs, full support likely won't arrive until the next-generation 900-series chipsets launch alongside Zen 6 processors. According to expert 1usmus, AMD needs to optimize the CA bus—the control artery responsible for carrying commands and status signals between the processor and other components. Upgrading this internal “expressway” is key to unlocking the blistering speeds of CUDIMMs, which are already racing toward the DDR5-10000 milestone.

Fishtanks are even worse for a maintenance angle. Not only do you have more unecessary space to cleanup, most likely that the back portion of the case has less space for decent cable management. Airflow is also inconsistent because the overly big space means more idle air across the case unless the case itself has 6+ fans, which is worse for noise + dust collecting.

My main rig is stuffed into one of these bad boys:
IMG_4623.webp IMG_4624.jpeg
An Apevia X-Cruiser 2. At least 16 years old.

The front is a door that opens and the thermals are not super good so i converted the four drive bays into a single fan liquid cooler dock and printed a removable grille facade for it that matches the style and holds the door open. Yes that works fine.

The issue is the stuff scratches very easily.
The side panel will scratch if you look at it, but i like that in this case the acrylic allows the panel to have a fan on it.

Yep. I keep my case on the floor where it belongs and will take the scratch resistance of tempered glass any day over acrylic.

I remember having an all acrylic case back in the early 2000s (you had to screw the panels together using little acrylic corner blocks) and uh....what a mess that case became lol.

Looking into building a desktop in the near future (picked a bad time, I know, but I need something that isn’t a laptop). What’s the deal with Intel GPUs? Good choice for the price or too far behind the others to be worthwhile?

The market does a pretty good job of discounting price vs performance and features. On raw price v perf, they are a pretty good buy, but then you have to consider feature-wise:
  • Not as many games support XeSS
  • Dodgy support for very old games (DX9 or older)
  • Still in the "teething problem" era of new products (e.g. ReBAR performance issues with Ryzens)
But at around $250 for a B580 right now, I can't say that's a bad price.

How much is $100 worth to you? Because for roughly that much more you can get a 9060 XT 16GB and that's a way better deal.

Intel's good if you plan to do video work or if you're like, literally scraping together your pennies in a jar to get to $250. I would not bother with it if you have options.

This price jumped back up $20, but I have just now seen that Newegg is offering $330 for 6900XT trade ins. A ~$235 upgrade to the 9070 (non-XT) feels pretty tempting.
Update: I decided to tempt fate and bought the Sapphire Pulse 9070 and sent in my 6900XT. Newegg just approved the trade in and sent a refund for $330, Performance with the 9070 has been perfectly satisfactory, it sips power and stays quieter compared to the 6900XT. Plus I can play around with LLMs and ROCM now. I only paid $500 for the 6900XT so this has overall seemed like a good deal.

On Newegg, cheapest b580 is $239 right now, 9060 XT is $379, so that's $140. I wouldn't go that cheap on a GPU, but it's roughly on a par with a 4060 and should be fine for gaming for a long time. You can get an Arrow Lake CPU under $200 right now, too.

I got my hands on a steam deck OLED for Christmas. I am pretty impressed and how capable it is for something so light and portable. Desktop mode works great as well. It's going to be insane what these are capable as the nodes continue to shrink and chips get even more efficient.

I’m not broke, but I am a tight ass. I’ll look for a motherboard that has dual PCIe slots so when I inevitably want to upgrade I can see about a dual GPU setup. That aftermarket upscaling thing Mr Gamers Nexus talked about that works with dual GPUs seems really cool, and I wanna try running some local AI models, which would work well with that also I think.

I use a arc b580, do you think its worth upgrading to a 9060xt? Its only a $100 bucks in price difference.
