They did at one time. Not sure about now. I think that was mostly the 80s and 90s. And yes, it is the culture. Sweden for example has the whole lågom shit where you can never be too hot or cold. I can think of several other cold countries where people are happier because it's not taboo to rant about shit that happens in your life sometimes.

I don't know why you are bringing the Baltics into this. They are not and never will be Nordic culturally or genetically even linguistically. Even the Finns are not really Nordic..

All of the Nordic countries, as well as Finland, have suicide rates lower if not substantially lower than the United States.

The former European SSRs all have spectacularly bad suicide rates. Lithuania, Russia and Ukraine are in a dead heat for the win. Latvia and Belarus are more of the "show/place" bets. Estonia is nothing to write home about, not great, not terrible.

Latvia and Belarus might be contenders in the future, though, with a remarkable 6:1 ratio of men killing themselves vs. women.
