So was I. But it was harder for me to meet guys except for AOL IM chats, which is why I said it.

There were plenty of other places, but generally someone had to tell you about them -- the average internet user did not know the telnet even existed.

But your cool, older friend on AOL who kept telling you how smart and funny you were for your age would be happy to guide you to them.

It was very, very easy to pretend to be something you weren't.

I mentioned some online guy who tried to groom me and was obsessed with meeting me when I was Tanja's age.

When I look back on it, this guy was pretending to be somebody else.

The guy told me he was 18 but his "18 years old" photo he posted to me in AOL Instant Messenger looked like it was taken in the 1970s, including his clothes.

Naivete and wishful thinking papered over a lot of red flags that should have been easy to see.

I had a buddy -- quite a bit older than Tanja -- who was gleeful over the scorching hot nudes his latest online conquest had sent him.

I took one look at them and instantly recognized them from a Playboy spread. Not the specific one, but Playboy photography was extremely easy to spot. I told him this, and still he flat out refused to accept until he confronted her about it a few weeks later. He wouldn't tell me exactly what went down, but I can't blame him for that. Mortifying.

Now that I think about it, from maybe 1998 to 2001 or so, it would be so much easier for some pedo to groom a naive teenager, compared to now, even though nowadays, sex predators have more choices because of social media, like Twitter, even Tumblr, Discord or Roblox. Hell, look at the whole story with D4vid or whatever that retard's name is, who successfully groomed a minor and his fans all knew about it.

Back then, it would have been way easier to groom a child or teenager online because we didn't have cell phones, it was easier to hide, and if someone disappeared it's not like you could call them or text them to ask where they are. So if someone disappeared, they'd just disappear and you never hear from them again.

I have a relative in her sixties who thought she was going to marry a famous singer and met him online! Fortunately for her when she wanted to meet “him,” he was a no show but only after giving him several thousand dollars and selling off all her furniture because she wouldn’t need it when living in this singer’s multimillion dollar mansion.

They found a secret Army base in Antarctica because idiots there were using Fitbits and uploading location data. So there was suddenly this hotspot of activity where nothing had previously been known to be.
Can you tell us more about this? Nothing paranormal, I assume, just glowies having off-the-books bases to get one over on their enemies.

Basically there was a "see fitbit paths because they didn't turn off that part " site, and a few people spoofed goofy things in goofy places, and a few people noticed a rectangle in the antarctic, either spoofed graffiti or guys running the jogging path

I remember the Chinese/Russians were mapping our missile silo sites/Air Force bases by fitbit patterns.

Aren't you Br*Tish? Next time I'm in England visiting family I'll hit you up.

It is kind of a shame we're known as the evil tranny murder site and have to be secretive. It would be fun to have spergy KF meetups otherwise. There were big forums I was a part of in the aughts and 2010s that had some really fun meetups and I'm still friends with people I met up with.

Same, I'm still friends with some people from the glory days of forums.

Sadly the only forums I post on now is this evil stalking site or super geeky hobby ones where it will be just a bunch of other men in their forties and no hot bitches with father issues.

I weep for what reddit could have been.

I still recall this dude from an old video game chatroom I hung out on back in the day.

Dude was US military, shared his full name, and was pursuing underage girls. It was so weird -- moreso the attitudes that people had about that shit back then.

Definitely met some weirdo online.

As much as people like to pretend the internet was the hinterlands before Facebook got going in 2005, the internet was pretty common by the mid-90s. My grandma had AOL by 1995. Shit, I had my own Hotmail account by 1997-1998 and my parents were rabid technophobes. We were using AOL Instant Messenger around that time as well; the dorks would use ICQ. 1998 is not a particularly unusual year for this to happen at all.
It´s not impossible, but the late 1990s were also a time when classic pen-and-paper letters by "offline" mail were still very much a thing. Maybe still a little more common at the time for many teenagers than social media.
Pretty much every West German magazine for children or teens had a penpal corner that published ads by kids looking for pen friends - giving their full name and address, age, interests, the kind of pen pal they were hoping to find. Some magazines even allowed passport pictures to be included. Pretty much unthinkable nowadays (almost like a mail-order catalog for pervs), but in those days, to a lonely kid believing they were the only one for miles around that liked a certain band, or was into a niche hobby like anime, it was a lifeline that connected them with like-minded friends. (Was around at the time.)

But it would not have been difficult for someone with less harmless intentions to pick up one of those magazines and write to a young girl or boy, pretending to be whatever penpal the kid was looking for. Higher cost (stamps) and a much higher risk of leaving a tangible trace than using social media, but still possible.

Quote from speddit about Mr. Cruel:

"If someone shows up in your house wearing a gimp mask saying all they want is money…it’s time to fight for your life."

I was on several sewing and knitting forums years ago, and made an online friends with a woman who lived somewhat local to me. We had talked about meeting up in a place known to us both, but hadn't finalized anything.

Unfortunately, she turned out to be one of the "George Bush did 9/11" people. Started ranting about jet fuel can't melt steel beams and other shit. I don't know what triggered her to go off, but I was glad we never met up.

The last time I tried anything like online romance (and it's a long time ago now; I ultimately learned to stop sticking my dick in beehives), the lady turned out to be so rabidly pro-abortion that she tried to lure me into giving my opinion, and was extremely troubled (and suspicious, and upset, and downright angry, really) when I offered the totally milquetoast "I think it's a complicated issue."
