The tetrazzini looks good from a ration standpoint, and of course Steve dumped it out to make a historical document, but this is definitely one of those times where the best "plating" is to eat it out of the bag and not look at it too much.

And he once again makes his drinks thick as glue and still complains they are watery. 🤢 I love the dude, but his penchant for drinking syrup is one thing I will never understand.

Florida Man has evolved into a being that gets most of its moisture by breathing air, thus avoiding potentially-contaminated water sources. That must be why Steve says "not thirst-provoking" in such approving tones; it means something, when you have to be certain every water source wasn't peed in by a radioactive meth zombie.

I actually like those derpy dry crackers with the thick stick to the roof of your mouth peanut butter they put in those things. I had a few rations with these when MREs were the new variety of rations. I can't remember the mains, but I loved those crackers.

Once you get to a certain age, you don't bounce back from massive food poisoning as quickly and easily as you used to. Steve has paid the price plenty of times for daring sketchy 40 year old rations enough over the years that this was bound to happen.

That or he ends up in the hospital hooked up to fluid bags while he spews non-stop from both ends. Again.

I'd love to know how they perform a 10-year inspection. Eyeball it, or do they make a random private eat an MRE from the box every 10 years?

They could really save money by mailing samples to Steve. Each package within the ration that he opens, he's putting himself in such suspense and then--sigh of relief, it's still good! Bless that tri-laminate pouch material, and whatever minor angel watches Taster's Choice packets.

Spoon music was subdued today. Maybe he didn't want to overshadow the "best hiss ever" at 4:53.

The 1943 US Army Field Ration C was a nice blast from the past, both the ration and Steve getting over his recent fear of tasting well-aged food. Or having a comparatively large selection of non-meat items meant he could pick and choose to do some actual tasting. Maybe Steve's resolve was steeled by the promise of a post-prandial cigarette.

The "Biscuit Unit" must be where my cat served.

Seeing the lemon drink powder’s original shade of light goldenrod was insane after so many years of oxidized brown, the WWII cans really do seem to be a genuine gacha roll on whether or not it’s rusted brown dirt inside or spotless condition after 80 years

Steve returns, with a 2023 Chinese Type 20 A Cold Climate Mountain Ration.

I thought it was going to be like one of the Norwegian arctic rations until he showed the package, and then I thought it was going to be like one of those Mayday survival bars. That it had components was a surprise. All in all this looks pretty neat; something I'd like to try in a mini version.

2023 Norwegian Spinach Couscous Arctic Field Ration -- OK, was there a cold snap in Florida? "It's vegetarian. Sorry."

This ration just looks cozy. Plain ol' soup, hot fruit soup, coffee and a bar to gnaw on.

"Look at this--there's your spoon. They changed it again."

Now thats a fucking blast from the past. I saw the freeze-dried stew and childhood memories of having that exact ration came flooding back. My dad was military around this time, always had a ton of extra cases of MRE's lying around, so he would just let us kids have at them.

It's probably why I'm somewhat obssessed with these damn things. I can get why a soldier would be sick of em, but as a civ, they're like the "boss" variant of a Lunchable/TV Dinner.

That was a SHIT TON of couscous and lentils in that dehydrated stew. I'm not surprised it was the better part of a thousand calories itself. I'd really love to try it myself, but not up to paying the kind of price a Norweigan MRE from halfway around the world would likely be.

Steve likely would have found the fruit soup less 'viscous' had he actually used more then half the suggested water for it. (sigh) It's never gonna change but it's never gonna stop irritating me, I don't know why. :\

Steve is a secret Fremen and has a huge hidden cache of water that he's saved over the years.

I dunno, but I get it. If you're eating things for posterity, you ought to mix them up correctly. Or mix them with less water, try it, then add more water to see what the artist intended.

Lentils maybe needed more water, but more likely just more dwell time. Lentils.aren't freeze-dried chicken.

Speaking of, Steve was weirdly hostile at the vegetarian aspect in this one, or it was just humor falling flat. It's not deep; it's just bean soup! Probably good to have a lentil-heavy MRE toward the end of the rotation to keep the pipes working.

I assume the suggested water takes in account the soldier doesn't drink a lot more on his own, and they try to keep them properly hydrated. Steve doesn't want to thin out the taste too much so he adds less. But I say this as someone who uses more choco mix per glass of milk than the box tells me to.

It looked better than I expected, though I do like couscous and spinach so I could be a bit biased. If I opened up a ration and it looked like that I wouldn't be complaining
