Whenever some politician or CEO or whatever says "there is a shortage of laborers" what they're actually saying is "we want labor to be cheaper." They CAN simply train new workers, or offer fair wages that attract qualified workers, but it COSTS MONEY and they will therefore MAKE LESS. They just don't wanna do that. A lot of businesses will actually die if they have to start paying fair compensation to their workers. And they should die. Paying high wages should literally be a principled no-compromise American policy. So the only way you can possibly survive as a business is to get more value out of your workers by training them and making sure you select high quality people. And of course by using innovation to operate more efficiently. Literally the inverse of what is encouraged naturally when you have access to infinity brownslimes.

I'm arguing were at the end of the Republican era and waiting for some kind of emperor to change fundamental norms. The consuls and proconsul's who have become extremely wealthy and powerful from forgein wars are causing the destruction of the social mobility which gave the republic it's vigor. Some could argue that our Sula was FDR that Washington and to a degree Lincoln was our Cincinnatus. I'd argue that our Sula will be Trump and maga more broadly. What's next is if we get Caesar or if we can somehow jigger the republic to continue working.

We also have the problem of our empire and how we can shift the burden or rearrange how it works. Trump seems to be doing that with forcing Europe to start paying their NATO dues, talking with Japan about their military etc.

That being said I'm not a fatalist and just because a pattern can be found doesn't mean x or y will happen. I do hope and believe it can be turned around.
 
Lol my priest told a sermon today about "people who obsess over every bad news article and use them as an excuse to give up on improving the world".

I guess we're not the only ones having this problem.

From some long ago lecture I watched it was explained that roman ness was something that people started being able to set in and out of depending on what they needed.

In Alric's case he fought in the roman army and basically the administration stiffed him.

I read/heard that she asked Trump for his endorsement for her Senate bid, and that after his people ran the numbers and looked at "internal" polling showing she had no chance in a general election and would get bitch-slapped by Jon Ossoff all day long and twice on Sunday, he declined to endorse her.

Sure, but you need to remember that the online right is only one subset of the rightoid politics.If you were to poll MAGAts, i bet at most 20% would actually know who the gay mexican twink actually is, and even less would have any idea what a 'groyper' is.

You are 100% correct but the already high prices of everything will have to increase dramatically higher to support those new wages. It has to happen gradually, probably as long as it took for the problem to get as bad as it has (20+ years).

And a hundred years after that point, Romanized Germans increasingly thought they could run the Roman Empire better than the Romans, i.e. Theodoric the Great and the Ostrogoths, and Odoacer (who deposed the last emperor).

Ultimately both the Ostrogoths and even the Byzantines that sought to restore the lands were far removed from Arminus and Augustus, and it wasn't so much barbarians overrunning the empire, but a changeover of leadership (from both a lack of leadership from demoralized Romans, and aspiring legal immigrants).

That would place him as an enemy of the USA and the Whitehall Mandarin's would panic fearing that the 'Special Relationship' was in jeopardy.

Regardless of who the PM and POTUS are, the 'Special Relationship' must not fail according to the diplomats on either side.
