I saw someone mention that "Emily is Jake's editor" and had to double-check, figuring there's no way tech shrek is doing that

It was indeed not, rather just another LTT expat.

I'm also somewhat surprised Sarah Butt the LTT merch designer (Jake's fiancé) didn't leave when Jake did, have to wonder if she has a more lucrative pay-structure where she gets a cut of product sales or something. And bizarrely, she's got to be one of the more senior people even left at LTT with the recent exodus, iirc she joined 2017-2018 to do thumbnail art and then became their merch designer when they started selling T-shirts and mousepads.

Linus bitching about members only videos. It's annoying that he basically tries to act as an authority on shit like this. But YouTube sucks and changes shit without telling people.

It seems like Floatplane really can't compete with YouTube.

I doubt these "new" channels will make it, if LTT can't make it with +10 subs, what does these smaller slop channels offer? They are just as insufferable infront of a LTT owned camera as infront of their own. Besides, maybe it's a strategy to start up as many channels as possible and start a slop network. Many other Youtubers have done this, wouldn't be suprised if maybe there is slight chance he has part ownership over, or are just workingthose channels.

I think the worst part about working for LTT is that you have a group of "celebrities" that are your co-workers and are the "inner circle" of the boss. I'm sure that many of the employees are also big LTT fans.
How does anyone raise their hand and point out that something is wrong or could be done better? I can imagine most people won't want to do it.
I kind of feel for them because becoming a "celebrity" changes people and the nature of things.

2 people can make same quality content as a team of 100. Working on your own passion projects on a schedule which you decide is a lot more efficient than a corporate structure with 9-5 work days.

The below post links to some normie YouTubers talking about the situation but the poster (@0da2) is retarded, fat and probably a homosexual and doesn't know how to embed videos so you will have to use your epic RGB gaming mouse you bought on LInus' advice to click the links manually:
Not embedding content from a website owned by the most profitable advertising platform into one of the most maligned websites still online is based actually.
A reminder that if you have your referer header enabled in your browser, they know where you're watching the content from. And if you're signed into your Google account like the good nigger cattle you are, they can see exactly who you are while you use the site.

I didn't realize real Emily left, she was just in the Scrapyard Wars video as a judge. I also didn't realize Sarah is dating/engaged to Jake, talk about not even trying canadian women.

Anyway, an actual decent video because Bitwit's in it, and interestingly Intel sponsored this video. Wonder if AMD is feeling they don't really get the ROI for their own sponsor stuff anymore or if the rates at LTT have changed. Good for Kyle that his oversold insurance actually paid out, but it does seem like he has the thousand yard stare of dealing with the city to get his house rebuilt (it won't because California and LA are mega faggots). There is a horrible Riley ad read in it though, be warned.

the whole point of a grifter is to act as authority that young people (or hypebeasts, same shit) don't know any better than to listen to because they have no role models. It's been that way before the youtube paradigm, when i was a kid it was fucking basketball players. it's just that youtube made guru style grifting extremely profitable and linus made gangbusters because technology is like cool and professional and stuff. trying to excite the normies about new products doesn't sell product anymore.

I mean aside from the gummy horse smile she's pretty cute in a perfectly normal girl next door kind of way.

Oh you meant tranthony. 🤮

It's argue it's really easy to make a living online with a lean operation. If ZTT stays 2 people, how hard do you think it is to break the ~$200k a year mark to claim 100k each? If they do one video a week they have to average $4166 per video in revenue, A channel consistently getting hundreds of thousands of views might be able to get that much in a sponsor spot alone. Add youtube revenue, a patreon, and sell some shitty tshirts you'd be doing fine. And hey anything you make a video on you can claim as a business expense and avoid taxes.

Plus their patreon already has 3,209 members, if each were giving them only $4 each (lowest tier) that's over $150k freedom bucks, already >$200k canadian.

Or look at Techmoan, he's a one man operation, lives a very plain life, his videos are lucky to crack 200k views and he doesn't do sponsors, but is charming enough to get >7000 patrons paying at least $1 each. Seems plenty worth it to me.

Sure, but they have way less overhead. Overhead cost doesn't increase linearly with the number of (actual working) employees - it's difficult to avoid significant bloat as your company grows.

I remember floating the idea, at least a year or so ago here. I didn't do any deep analysis; just noticed how they both happened to have a cat named Arlo, and asking "What are the odds?" I never took it further than that, but had to point it out because there were people on the LTT subreddit thirsting over her. So not only was she taken, she getting tech'd by Yvonne's Bull.

In short, they were fired for violating their non-competes when they launched the Zip Tie Tuning channel. This was after LMG put the kibosh on a car focused channel, in part due to a downturn after the Gamers Nexus videos. To quote: "The amount of damage his videos did to the channel cannot be overstated. With lost sponsors, terrible community sentiment, and some really good talent leaving the company because they did not sign up for death threats." He then goes on to be somewhat critical of Steve's videos but readily admits that LMG had "an incredible number of issues."

As far as the getting fired part went, he said he was pulled into a meeting with LMG management + HR shortly after the launch of ZTT for violation of the non-compete. He states he was given the following three options:
  1. Take down Zip Tie Tuning
  2. Hand over the channel to LMG and become the channel manager
  3. Get fired
He and Andy both chose option three: "Get fired, get a generous severance package, own my own company, and do whatever I want to do with Andy [...] That was not a hard decision."

Also, they launch a tech focused channel at the end of the video if anyone cares:

Wow thanks for that.

I seriously been seeing the video and didn't watch it I sure it would be a suck off video no matter what happened.

This is the fall of Linus. Maybe on his way to being a lolcow of sorts.

Linus has a crazy superiority complex because he come over as a gay twink it disarms people would not be surprised if loads of verging on abusive dirt start coming out.

Linus has had near miraculous luck of not getting the shit that comes with being a YouTube his audience pretty much sucks him off 24/7 and if that changes I don't think he'll be able to cope with not being praised.

His channel has the feeling lately of when a company outside of YouTube makes video like the verge or something

Am I the only one who despises LTT's I guess "guerrilla" style of cross promotion? They'll sprinkle in "over on mac address", "from labs", "on floatplane", "from shortcircuit" etc. in their videos all the time with no mention of what these things are, that LTT runs/owns them, why they are being mentioned or where they are. To me it comes across as them trying to pretend like those things are independent/trustworthy when really its just another arm of the Linus octopus. Also I am baffled at how floatplane can be anywhere near a viable business. Dump hundreds of thousands if not millions into developing a shit youtube clone, not to mention ongoing server costs, that users need to pay a lot of money to access just to watch LTT videos on, and who else? Maybe like 5 other dummies who upload shit there? Why? Why would anyone sign up for this, ever? Plus as mentioned before the website doesn't explain what the site is at all, compounding with my first point. In what scenario could floatplane ever make a profit?

Thread tourist from the community feature submission thread. I remember seeing a ChudLogic segment a while back about Emily Young who broke away from LTT to go his own way:
(L|A)

Checking on his channel today, I see no further videos uploaded since that PC build issue video:
Emily_Young_Channel.png

ChudLogic makes exact same points I would think seeing this situation. Having all these issues with the PC build, even with supposed expertise would make for potentially interesting content to show how to work through potential issues as part of a PC build. Not generating some level of the promised content while continuing to leech money from Patreon is wild. I don't think this situation is all that unique to LTT though.

I think people involved in larger channel content creation overestimate their ability to generate content on their own, maybe partly assuming that the work done by other team members is relatively easy work that they could just do themselves. Once they start working on their own, only then do they realize just how much work and effort is involved.

Emily Young's Patreon below:

I suspect that some people jumping ship will make it on their own perfectly fine (as they would of been successful anyways), but many of them are going to crash and burn when they find out the reality of being self-sufficient.

When Luke and a couple part-time programmers started talking about Floatplane, I was interested because there was/is a need to improve available options to serve video (VoD and livestreams), both online and over an intranet. And it's hilarious that after years of work and investing 7 figures, it never became more than a glorified recode of popular open source software.

I think it was a longshot to ever be commercially viable as a Nebula/Patreon video service (in a best case scenario). But with Linus' insistence on getting big boy data centre and CDN services, the only reason floatplane is useful financially is as a shell company on their books.

If architected differently and offered as a white label product (with optional hosting) Floatplane instances may have been a somewhat lucrative niche. At peak, if LTT had branched into offering software and services like that (VPN, hosting, etc.) I think the long-term viability would have been secured, versus what they ended up doing with merch, slop videos, and Labs.

Oh look more youtube nepotism, I highly doubt bitwit is so poor he needed Linus to come in and save him.
Oh jesus, they are building him a nas?
