How awfully, pointlessly pedantic when Obama's statement, carefully worded as usual, actually offers condolences to far more Palestinians than Israelis. Who are the "Israeli families"? Those specific families with relatives who were killed or taken on October 7th. Who are the "people of Gaza"? The whole two million who reside in the Strip. And then Obama calls to rebuild Gaza without an equal call for Israel's security. I'm aware of Ms. Rachel's previous remark of Palestinian advocacy, but now I'm even more suspicious of her aims when Obama's statement still isn't good enough for her.

We should have never traded with them or allowed them to infiltrate or economy and ruin our heavy industry with sub-standard cheap trash products.

That we needed Trump for the US to make the right step into slapping down Communist China is a real downer. I hate the clown, but the policies are good this time around.

To be fair nixon was trying to drive that wedge between china and ussr even further.

In 2008 there was an honest chance IMO for china to go a different way to be more open etc.

Then Xi got into power, looked at how the USSR failed and basically pulled china back to it authortian roots.

when both Mao and Stalin died the people elites that survived his terror did reforms to basically prevent that shit from happening again and it honestly lasted a good while.

It's always bullshit like a goofy looking knife or a differently shaped laser pointer. The kind of nonsense retards buy because they have a couple of extra dollars from their SSI check and if the bank account isn't at 0 than they don't know what to do with themselves. Now I don't see those retards going away anytime soon but I'd rather they waste their money on something domestic than God knows what piece of shit has been shipped overseas.

As an ageing Gen-Xer I have never understood why we cozied up to the ChiCom horde. To me it makes as little sense as if we'd set up a Most Favored Nation trade status with the USSR and started buying their cars, clothes, and transistor radios.

Nixon's going to China while China is still giving artillery shells, missiles, and fighter jets to Vietnam so Vietnam can murder American boys in the winding down war there was absolute lunacy, and don't even get me started on the buttfucking that Taiwan has gotten. I'm sick to death of having watched every president kowtow to the PRC because "hEy At LeAsT tHeY wErEnT ThE sOvIeTs" no they're fucking worse because we didn't build factories to create sensitive electronics in the USSR. We did, in China, and guess what, copies of same have modernized Iranian, North Korean, and even less savory countries' military apparatuses.

The USSR was motivated by a political ideology of "Everybody! Let's SOVIET!" and on the face of it they had to know that was never going to win. They went from Hapsburg adjacent swampy plains with delusions of grandeur to totalitarian superpower to second world has-beens in the space of 75 years. Do they suck now? Unquestionably, but that's another discussion entirely.

But the Chinese? The Chinese are hellbent on consuming the fucking planet like locusts. Their Manifest Destiny is "Everyone is subservient to us by 2100, regardless of what government we have". They are an actual bughive. The world's biggest mistake post WW2 can be argued but I'd say one of them was not letting that country collapse into a bunch of competing Asian backwaters. The world would be far, FAR better off.

A space elevator attached to Earth is likely impossible. No known material is strong enough to withstand the tension where it will be greatest, at geosynchronous equatorial orbit, where apparent gravity will be zero. This altitude is 35,786 km. The counterweight needs to be much higher. But if such a setup were possible, it would be highly useful in sending spacecraft out of Earth's gravity well and to wherever they need to go.

The International Space Station's altitude is between 370 and 460 km. You can see it with the naked eye, but to make out any details other than a rapidly moving, bright light in the sky, you need specialized equipment and really know what you're doing. It's doable though, I've seen photos taken from Earth that were clear enough to make out various modules and even a spacewalking astronaut as a blurry speck. So the counterweight, almost two orders of magnitude farther away, would be much more difficult to see.

It would be theoretically possible to build space elevators around other bodies as large as Mars or Earth's Moon. This could be useful for mining, as the elevator could slingshot materials to places where they will be used, but there's the human factor involved as this could easily be weaponized. Mars would be complicated by its moons, which would intersect the cable's position from time to time. Smaller bodies like Psyche could be ideal for mining all sorts of metals.

There have been experiments in redirecting asteroids, in case a large one threatens Earth. These have already met with protest, but some of that came from literal astrologers complaining horoscopes will be disrupted and really no one should listen to those people.
