Interesting that Will conflates "converting" (changing a person's ideas) with "silencing" (making someone afraid to speak for fear of humiliation or violence).

I suspect that Will literally doesn't know the difference. In Will's conception of the world, you observe the social consensus of your peers, and you announce your conformity to it, and that's how you get your ideas. He cannot conceive of any method of arriving at his beliefs that isn't "considering what is safe and popular to say."

It explains so much about Will and people like him.

Has anyone figure out if he really is autistic and socially bad or purposely pretending to be obtuse? Usually people this autistic just focus on trains or some obscure hobby and avoid politics.

There is this pretty good quote making it's way around that I think explains people like Will very well. It goes something like this:

"So much of current political discourse is liberals pretending to not understand the most basic shit to ignore the arguments and positions they don't like it is unreal."

So yes, he is being purposefully obtuse and pretending to not understand things because it allows him to deflect and avoid addressing actual issues he has no way to deal with.
