This is going to be a fringe experience but my parents adopted a 1-yr old pug that was too energetic for the owner, an elderly old woman. She had trained him to slap a jingle bell on a chain hung from a doorknob to communicate "I want to go outside" and tried using a shock collar to curb his barking in an apartment setting.

He kept the bell training which was nice, but they had never owned a shock collar before and tested it; it delivered a shock for sure but the pug built up a resistance to it and it just basically did nothing to him. Never heard him yelp from it, and it didn't impact his barking.
