Reminds me of a recent post on /r/fuckcars (I am too lazy to archive) where some Tiktok zoomer was complainng about having half a block to some drive-through coffee shop (didn't catch the name or identify the place). His "why you don't put the coffee shop in the apartment building" lacks understanding of why that's not a good business practice and why drive-through restaurants tend to do well while "mixed-use" storefronts tend to struggle. (I don't think I need to explain it here, but will if asked).

It's a Scooter's Coffee in Davenport, Florida (a suburb of Orlando):

The development is brand new and has no satellite imagery on Google Maps.

While not the same aesthetic that they like, the area is actually fairly walkable because it's located on a major commercial arterial street.

Within walking distance of that apartment complex (which is irrelevant because it's Central Florida and no one walks outside due to the heat and humidity), there are three coffee shops, an ice cream store, two bodega convenience stores, two pizzerias, a supermarket, a British pub, an Irish pub, an Acai bowl place, a drugstore, three fast food restaurants (McDonalds, Wendy's and Chipotle), a church, a sushi restaurant, a pancake restaurant, a burger restaurant, a Thai restaurant, a Puerto Rican restaurant, two dollar stores, and more:

(from Dutch Bros to the entrance to the apartments is ~2000 ft/600 meters).

Also I was right--the apartment complex in question has all sorts of amenities.

  1. Resort-Style Saltwater Pool with Sunshelf
  2. Pool Cabana
  3. Expansive Fitness Center
  4. Co-Working Spaces & Conference Rooms
  5. Grill Stations
  6. GameDay TV Wall with Entertainment Bar
  7. Golden Tee Gaming Lounge & Bar
  8. Yoga Lawn
  9. Pet Friendly Community w/ Small and Large Dog Parks
  10. Pet Spa
  11. Tot Lot
  12. Resident exclusive credit building program by paying monthly rent on time
...which is exactly the sort of "community" elements they crave (even the video game and bar stuff) without going to some fast food coffeeshop. Do these people even really know what they want?

Dutch Bros in Florida. What's next, Taco Time? What a goddamn world we live in now.
Their rapid expansion in Texas was breathtaking to watch. I'm surprised they haven't all died in mass closings like Salad and Go did.

You should know by now that these people dont want solutions, they want a bad guy to circlejerk over and/or they're so unlikeable that nobody wants them in any community element besides their inpersonal faceless circlejerk on the web

They recently opened one in Muncie, Indiana. I don't know if it's just because it's new, but I have seen circles around the drive-thru the last three Sunday’s on my way to church. People want that coffee it seems.
I haven't had it outside my PNW trips. It's okay? I wouldn't sit in line for it.

Again, I don't like the kioskification of coffee shops (Scooter's, Dutch Bros, and now Biggby has a literal division making prefab buildings for their new locations) just because I don't drive through much, but it sure is a popular model. At least the Starbucks made out of containers near the Museum of Flight looked good.

Dutch Bros' whole model is drive-through coffeeshops. They have a few with seating in the PNW but these are incredibly rare and unusual situations. Here in Texas they're almost always new-build though there's one in Houston in an old Sonic (which never had seating) and they're taking up a few old Salad and Go locations (which are also drive-through).

I suspect in the case of Starbucks, their original "drink and relax" model is outdated as it's not a big novelty for coffeeshops to have Wi-fi anymore and laptops, and their "urban" locations are likely hideously expensive to operate (wages, rent, etc.) while the more suburban locations with drive-throughs are the real moneymakers.

I think they do want "solutions", but the problem is they have a bad case of Reddit Dunning-Kreuger syndrome and their "ideal" solution is basically being a tourist or being back in college (either way significantly detached from reality and won't see it any other way). You can definitely see the more retarded and less retarded people in that community. Plus there's the "I embrace suck" like filthy bodegas element that's a fascinating trainwreck as well.

"Yes, we freakin' love third placerinos! They are so 100 wholesome chungus!"
"NO, NOT LIKE THIS! THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A COMMIE BLOCK WITH AN EXPOSED BRICK BARCADE AND A BODEGA ON THE GROUND FLOOR, NOT A MONUMENT TO EL HOMBRE NARANJA Y MALO!"

I don't get why people like this even live in places like Florida. Without cars there would be no community there, it would be a fucking swap.

Assuming Zoomer doesn't live with his parents and is whining about new construction, you generally find a job first and then have to adapt to whatever it has available. That's why plebs have to live in crummy suburban apartments, not a real house or a "hip" downtown apartment. I don't actually think Zoomer lives in those apartments, though, it seems he would be more aware of the apartments' amenities and he doesn't seem the person who just gets gifted a nice job out of college for connections or checking off the right boxes.

Generally, downtowns don't have the same parking minimums suburban areas do (and it's not retroactive--no downtown was EVER demolished to make parking minimums)...and "best use" advocates are cranks, all of them. A city street crammed with cars is better than an empty street with the occasional bicycle, yet you never see them arguing against it.

Arguably, the best use of the property is some government institution like a Presidential Library. It likely never been on the books for taxable property (Miami Dade College likely has been holding onto it for decades) and the only way it can be developed is a super-pricey condominium (gotta make back their investment). With that sort of thing you need to add parking...the demographic for "wealthy people who are content to live in bughives but don't have a car" doesn't actually exist.

These people never seem to get it through their heads (or maybe it's deliberate) that the main source of traffic problems, especially in the oh-so-progressive Northeast, are NIMBYs who litigate every possible road improvement because they don't want to ruin the "character" of their neighborhoods. These people are often boomers who claim to be progressives, and a not-insignificant number of the r/fuckcars community may be the failsons of these people.

It's easier for the redditors to just parrot the narrative that everybody owns a car that they just let sit in their garage collecting dust until the interstate gets an extra lane instead of doing something about rich Northeastern NIMBYs because superficially said NIMBYs hold the correct values. Martha's Vineyard is walkable. Martha's Vineyard accomplished that by doing everything short of posting a sign on the ferry terminal saying "niggers and Irish turn around and go back to Providence".

NIMBYs also are delusional and act like everyone in their position would agree with them. I've always supported road widening and other projects near me because I've seen the sort of havoc that results from not being able to improve them because of these people, and I don't want to be caught in traffic for 3 gazillion years commuting to work, noise be damned.

The younger /r/fuckcars people always seem to be living in suburban areas (and often red state areas, even if the city nearby is blue), which is why they're so bitter. For example, last Thanksgiving, there was some picture from an upper window of someone seething about his neighbors having friends and/or family over for dinner...unfortunately I wasn't able to find the exact address but it was suburban Nashville based on his Reddit posts.

Almost all of them have "fuck you Dad" energy, I feel that if they were part of the boomer NIMBY crowd they wouldn't bitch on Reddit, and usually the ones to burrow their way into a power unelected government position (and they aren't hanging out on Reddit sites like this). The thing about this thread is that most of them have zero money, zero credentials, and zero real life experience. There are neighborhoods in the city that they'd probably enjoy, with bars and food stores and loft apartments, but they'd rather live in a fantasy world (I say "fantasy world" because all the European areas they idolize are strictly tourist areas).

They have a shockingly clueless idea of what their own area is actually like, they would know that the city is not in fact, over an hour away by driving (even in rush hour traffic), that apartment complexes exist in their own community (you'd be hard-pressed to find a Wal-Mart Supercenter without apartment complexes within half a mile), and so on. They're so blinded by their hatred that they can't even appreciate a place where they can walk to half a dozen restaurants and a decent gas station from the door of their apartment complex.

Even then, nobody ever says an activity is good because it's white. I don't cook over a gas stove because it's a white man thing to do, I do it because it's convenient and cooks my meals.
Clearly you don’t know the best part of making meatballs.

Yes, exactly this. They are unhappy in their lives b/c they are loser bugmen and they tell themselves if they lived in a european-style city they'd have friends and community. all the the "third places" discourse must have the same psychological origin - they blame the external world for why they don't have any friends and stay inside on screens 24/7. If it's urban planning's fault they don't need to confront their poor social skills or steady diet of hot pockets and isekai.

NIMBY boomers themselves are not going to be posting on Reddit, but I guarantee you there's a not insignificant number of people on the sub that are the failchildren of these types. We've seen on this forum how many rich kids there are who do nothing but bum around, make fools of themselves and be general fuckups all on Daddy's dime.

In my area, every single "suburb" has a densely clustered small main street with shops, restaurants, and apartments, and even away from those, there's a ton of mixed-use shopping centers. Granted, this is a case of a bunch of small towns that spread out into each other, but the point still stands. These Redditors could actually go on a 15-minute ride on their beloved bikes to find everything that they want, but they'd rather piss and moan online. The equivalent of starving to death in the middle of McDonald's.

A lot of them are third-worlders who have never been to a suburb or driven a car:
