I think attraction to the tomboy archetype varies based on how much is visual versus behavioral. In the case of behavior its probably due to some sort of anxiety trying to cope with women typically acting and showing interest in things that are alien to men, in which a women that leans into more masculine interests and behaviors is easier to relate to and break the social barrier. There's nothing gay or complicated about wanting your life partner and mother of your children to be strong, healthy, active, motivated, hardworking, pragmatic, prudent, earnest, forthright, etc. "Masculine" interests and qualities are conducive to a virtuous life regardless of sex and any woman who possesses them is a prize.
