The Simpsons Movie will return for a sequel 20 years after the original, 20th Century Studios and Disney confirmed on Monday.

Based on Fox's popular and long-running animated sitcom - which follows the lives of Homer, Marge and their three children, Bart, Lisa and Maggie - the as-yet untitled sequel is set to be released on 23 July 2027.

The first film, released in 2007, saw Homer accidentally pollute the water supply of Springfield and then attempt to save his family and city, which had been sealed off under a huge glass dome.

The poster for the new film, shared on various social media platforms, shows a doughnut being grabbed alongside the tagline: "Homer's coming back for seconds."

Excited fans posted in the comments underneath, with many satirising the show's opening credits to show images of Bart writing lines on a school blackboard, which read: "I will not wait 20 years to make another movie."

The Simpsons first appeared in 1987 as cartoon shorts on another US TV show, before getting their own one two years later.

Created by Matt Groening, it has now aired for 37 seasons. And it was recently renewed through to season 40, which will air in 2028/29.

The first movie, directed by David Silverman, grossed an estimated $536 million (£400m) at the global box office, and there had been rumours in the press of a sequel for years but nothing was confirmed until now.

Showrunner Matt Selman recently told Variety that streaming had helped the series not only remain relevant to older viewers but also gain new fans.

"Now, instead of the kids watching it on local TV in the afternoon, they can just watch it all, all the time, all day, all forever," he said.

It sucked even back then, and now there are two more decades of rot and artistic bankruptcy on top of that. It's gonna be a legit war crime.

I'm sure the Drinker/Disparu/etc. videos will be pretty funny though.

Striking while the iron is frigid.

At least when the original movie came out, people remembered the good seasons. Now, I don't even know anyone who has watched the show in forever.

Sweet fuck let this show die already. By now It is older than Homer was supposed to be when the show first came out.
They're going to milk this show for another 40 years, its a cash cow. Once the VAs start to retire, they will hire new ones and use AI to alter the voices to make them sound the same.

And eventually Milhouse will troon out and become Barts lover, with Nelson as their 3rd. And the idiot fans of the show will lap it up.

I wonder what the odds are that this time they'll bring back hank scorpio and quickly fuck up the character and make him some trump supporting, ICE funding MAGA super villain

>The Simpsons Movie is closer to the show's first episode than it will be to The Simpsons Movie 2

I never thought it would go on this long. Who is even watching now? It hasn't been good since the 90s.

What did we do to deserve this particular layer of hell?

So what are the odds they're making this now in case Julie kavner passes soon.
Imagine the extreme whiplash trying to watch the movies back to back, people like apu and krabappel are just gone, every brown and anyone played by Pamela Hayden sound completely different and half the cast have new status quos. Hell just imagine going from 2007 marge to current marge.
The first movie had some quality, mainly the marge homer stuff even if done to death, this I cant imagine will even be watchable. The first movie was like trying to get the last few drops out of a juice box, we're now at the point of tearing it open and licking the inside despite knowing not a single molecule is left.

I've wondered for a while if The Simpsons actually became, at some point, an experiment on running a completely AI-generated show. Like they gradually phased it in as the tech became available: First AI-generated plotlines, then scripts, then voices, and finally animation. Maybe I'm just a schizo retard but I last caught a new episode somewhere around 2010-ish and even then it had strong AI slop energy.

Just once I want to hear someone say Orange man good, is that really such a terrible crime?

Yellow man good, orange man bad
