On Wednesday March 19th 2025, students and community in Stockton, California mobilized against a transphobic speaking event hosted by the crypto-fascist campus group Turning Point USA (TPUSA).
The event, titled “The Truth About Transgenderism,” was hosted by the newly-formed University of the Pacific (UOP) TPUSA chapter and featured “Pastor” Junsun Yoo as its speaker. This was the first public event from UOP’s TPUSA chapter, which is closely tied to Pastor Yoo’s Christian student group, The Nest. This new local chapter is part of a wave of fascist activity sweeping the country, and they wasted no time hopping on the coattails of the far-Right’s current scapegoating campaign against transgender people.
The event was publicly announced on March 4th. In response, a petition demanding the school cancel the event was posted to Change.org and quickly gained over two thousand signatures. Soon after, an alternative event at UOP’s Center for Identity and Inclusion was organized. Scheduled at the same time as the TPUSA event, it’s purpose was to provide a safe space for queer and trans students who might feel endangered.
Others took a more proactive approach. After an anonymous flyer began circulating online with the headline “No Hate in Stockton, Give TPUSA the Boot,” calling for a noise demo outside the building where the transphobic presentation was being held, disparate autonomous groups independently organized a counter-protest in answer to this call.
On the evening of the TPUSA event, Stockton showed up against hate in a multi-pronged effort to oppose, disrupt, and derail the event from all sides. Outside the auditorium, a crowd of over 150 people gathered with signs, banners, trans pride flags, noisemakers, and a cardboard caricature of Charlie Kirk’s face. Signs and banners read such things as “Fuck your hate,” “Trans rights are human rights,” and “Respect my trans homies or I’m gonna identify as a fucking problem.”
Protesters chanted “No Trump, no KKK, no TPUSA!,” read off a list of egregious quotes by TPUSA leadership, heckled a TPUSA streamer, and clashed with the police, who showed up with reinforcements and attempted to keep protestors in a fenced off “protest zone.” Police briefly tried – and failed – to arrest a protestor and to seize a megaphone, claiming that amplified sound was prohibited. However when pressed, they were unable to cite the code supporting that claim, and still tried to enforce it – a tactic we are all too familiar with.

After some examples of overt defiance and some negotiation amongst themselves, the initially hesitant crowd soon discovered that the police could do little to keep them cornered off, and the protest moved in unison to the grass in front of the auditorium entrance. At several points later in the night, protestors spotted police in riot gear and spread the word amongst the crowd to keep everyone safe and informed. People handed out masks, zines, and cookies, and wrote the legal number on each others’ arms. Street medics stood by in case of an emergency, providing reassurance, support, and escorts for those who required it. Beautifully, organically, a fragmented crowd became a cohesive force.
Meanwhile in the auditorium, another group of protesters staged a sit-in and disrupted the event from the inside. People heckled and argued with the speaker. Many wore masks with pride flags on them, refusing to be pushed back into the closet. At one point, the power was abruptly shut off during the Q&A, cutting off Pastor Yoo’s mic for a full 8 minutes as he fumbled about with sloppy arguments on gender-affirming care. According to one source, the sit-in accounted for over half of the event’s audience. Many more who planned to take part in it were turned away at the door, some for not having ID, some for “not looking the part,” which we can only assume to mean looking too queer or too “leftist.”
After the lengthy (and no doubt boring) speech came to an end, attendees began to trickle out of the building. Protestors moved closer and began chanting “Hate has no home!,” booing as attendees walked by. Some opted to leave via a side door to avoid the walk of shame past the angry crowd. Many sit-in participants came out and joined the protest, met with cheers and hugs.
Despite a shaky beginning, by the end of night the excitement and spirit of solidarity in the air was palpable. New connections were forged, rides home were offered, and we left feeling incredibly grateful for and humbled by the commitment and bravery of so many friends and total strangers, all coming together towards a common goal – to smash the seeds of reactionary hate before they can take root in our city. We must make every effort to maintain this energy for it to lead to many more blooms of rebellion against the rising tide of fascism.
All By Design
It’s worth mentioning that a majority Asian-American Christian group was TPUSA’s vehicle into UOP. Two Asian-American women students and an Asian-American speaker were chosen to be the public face of the event. According to TPUSA’s website, two young white men lead the UOP chapter. TPUSA frequently places its non-white membership front and center to counter (valid) accusations of their racism.
Events like this one that provide a platform for hateful rhetoric, often attracting the most dangerous factions of the far-Right: Proud Boys, Patriot Front, and the Traditionalist Workers Party, open Neo-Nazis. While we can breathe a sigh of relief that none of these groups were present in force, one attendee threw a roman salute/sieg-heil to the counter-protest on his way out. This is just a taste of the what we can expect on campus and in our hometowns if groups like TPUSA set up shop.
TPUSA doesn’t just attract these types – it creates them, too. The group’s own fascist, white nationalist agenda is thinly-veiled but well documented. It’s no mistake that they’re less public about their more objectionable views. Instead they strategically choose hot button topics that have mass appeal amongst conservative Americans, (like trans athletes and gender-affirming care for minors) to reel people in and push them further to the Right. This strategy has been extremely successful, which is why TPUSA is the first stop for many college students on the pipeline to far-Right extremism.
The Coming Conflict
It is unlikely that this will be the last of these events we will see locally, and when they come we must be ready. Our trans siblings, our immigrant siblings, and our siblings of color are under attack by the state. Whether or not you identify with any of these groups, even if you feel you are in no danger under this regime, your safety is temporary.
Authoritarianism dominates. That is its function. When we say “An Attack on One is an Attack on All,” we are not simply being poetic. This is demonstrable. We will either find our common interests and defend one another from this onslaught, or we will perish. This moment will not simply “pass.” If it goes unopposed, it will devour everything. It will not end with a Democrat in office or the return of DEI. The US Empire will continue to intensify the level of oppression here at home the same as it does abroad. We’re putting out the call – Strengthen your communities, build defense networks, organize mutual aid. Study the histories of authoritarian seizure of power and the paths they took to get there: know what we’re up against. Study resistance movements, both historical and current, successes and failures: know how to fight back. There is no time for hesitation. Now is the time to act.

STOCKTON, Calif. — Tensions ran high at the University of the Pacific Wednesday night as a demonstration took place in response to a Turning Point USA event featuring a controversial speaker.
The protesters, largely from the LGBTQ+ community, called for the event’s cancellation, citing concerns over the speaker's views on trans issues.
Outside the university's Long Theater, about 100 demonstrators gathered, chanting and holding signs protesting the appearance of Pastor Junsun Yoo, who was scheduled to speak on LGBTQ+ issues. Protesters voiced concerns about the university allowing a speaker with anti-trans views to hold an event on campus.
"We need to help one another and protect one another," one protester said.
"For me, it is the fact that people believe that these hateful ideas are allowed to foster as if they don’t have real-world consequences," another said.
Inside the venue, Pastor Yoo addressed the audience. The group hosting the event declined to comment on the demonstration but did acknowledge the presence of those in opposition.
Abigail Amaral, a trans woman, shared her perspective.
"It is a hard life, and it is not a choice," said Amaral, who was not affiliated with the university but attended the protest. "I think that hate has no room on this campus. To be honest, I do not even go to this school. I go to Delta but I heard about this protest and what was going on today and I was shocked."
The event was organized by a university chapter of Turning Point USA, a conservative political group co-founded by Charlie Kirk.
Governor Gavin Newsom also drew attention to Kirk when he mentioned earlier this month during a podcast appearance, while he supports the transgender community, he opposes the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Supporters of the transgender community stressed the importance of support over ridicule in these divisive times.
Inside the event, a few disruptions occurred. At one point, the venue lost power briefly, though the outage was resolved quickly.
In response to the protest, the University of the Pacific issued a statement before the event:
We have received several letters and messages regarding the upcoming event hosted by a student organization, the Turning Point USA (TPUSA) chapter at Pacific. We understand the event has raised distress among our community, particularly those within our LGBTQ+ population.
It is important to know that this event is not a university sanctioned event. This is a registered student organization event. As with all registered student organizations who invite speakers or host events, the university provides event space and audio/visual capabilities. No other university funds are allocated.
As the cornerstone of our educational mission, University of the Pacific, like most universities, upholds the constitutional concept of freedom of expression, even speech we do not agree with. Simultaneously, we remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering an environment that upholds our core values of inclusion and respect where all can thrive.
Understanding these principles, Pacific does not prevent recognized student organizations from inviting speakers to campus, even when the speakers espouse views that are antithetical to many of our understandings of how to best honor human dignity.
We understand that this event will be upsetting for many within our community. We take our community’s concerns seriously and are working closely with campus partners to ensure that all appropriate measures are in place to uphold our standards for respectful dialogue.
After the event, the university said:
“The university reports that the event sponsored by registered student group, Turning Point USA (TPUSA) at Pacific, proceeded as planned on Wednesday, March 19. 139 people were reported as having attended. Approximately 120 protestors demonstrated outside of the venue during the event. At one point, the building lost some power and amplified sound. The event continued until power was restored minutes later. The university is investigating the cause of the power outage.
At the same time, students, staff, and faculty came together for a separate event, called the LGBTQ+ Summit “There’s More to Us,” which was hosted at the Center for Identity and Inclusion. That event drew a crowd of more than 150 people.
The community successfully engaged in dialog, and we are proud of our community and our students for tackling difficult issues.”

Tensions ran high at University of the Pacific on Wednesday night as dozens of community members and students protested a controversial anti-LGBTQ+ event.
The event, titled "The Truth About Transgenderism," took place in Pacific's Long Theatre. It was hosted by Pacific's chapter of Turning Point USA and featured Pastor Junsun Yoo, who spoke about transgender issues.
Turning Point USA is an Arizona-based nonprofit organization that advocates for conservative politics on high school, college, and university campuses. It was founded in 2012 by conservative political activists Charlie Kirk and Bill Montgomery.
Some question Pacific for allowing anti-transgender speaker
About 120 demonstrators gathered outside of the Long Theatre before the event started, chanting and holding signs that said, "Hate has no home at Pacific," and "No Trump, No KKK, No TPUSA." Those who participated in the protest expressed concerns over the university's decision to allow a speaker with anti-transgender views hold an event on campus.
"As a nonbinary person, I've had struggles coming out because of how people will perceive me," Jenessa Franco, 18, of Stockton, said.
Franco found out about "The Truth About Transgenderism" through an Instagram ad. When they saw the ad, they questioned if the event was organized by Pacific's administration.
"Obviously I saw people were angry about it, so the only way we could let out our anger and make our voices heard is by making them heard in person to the people who are spreading lies about us," Franco said.
In a statement, school officials said the event was not a university-sanctioned event, but a registered student organization event.
"As with all registered student organizations who invite speakers or host events, the university provides event space and audio/visual capabilities. No other university funds are allocated," Pacific officials stated.
Olivia Wang, 30, of Manteca, attended the protest with her father. She said it was important for her to advocate for the safety of those in the LGBTQ+ community and inspire her children to advocate for others.
"I have three daughters and it's really important to me that with everything going on with our current administration and in our community right now, that I'm leading with the example of standing up for what we believe in and fighting for the people that we love and care about," Wang said. "I also want them to know that as they grow, no matter who they become or what they choose for themselves, that they'll always find acceptance within my family."
A designated area to protest, with at least five campus police officers surrounding the area, was set up with fencing outside of the theater.
At one point, a handful of protesters stood on the grass outside of the barricades. In response, campus police officers began to push protesters back to the parking lot. During the scuffle, one officer laid his hands on a student as he attempted to confiscate a sign. Minutes later, another officer threatened to remove a student for trespassing on private property in a separate incident.
Those who attended the Turning Point USA event were required to register before the event in order to be let into the theater. They were also asked to present their government-issued IDs and told they could not wear face masks by students who organized the event.
At least one LGBTQ+ supporter was denied entry to the theater despite registering weeks in advance and presenting their ID.
When asked about the entry issue, a university spokesperson said, "Everyone who showed an ID and was registered was allowed in. If someone wasn’t allowed in, it was because they refused to register or show an ID. These were the requirements set up by the student group running the event."
In total, 139 people were reported as having attended the event, according to a university spokesperson.
However, not all of the attendees agreed with the speaker's views. There were several attendees who voiced their disagreement during a question and answer session.
Power went out inside of the theater, cutting audio and some of the lights during the session. The event continued until power was restored minutes later. The university is investigating the cause of the power outage.
Tackling difficult conversations
At the same time, on the other side of campus at the Center for Identity and Inclusion, students, staff and faculty came together for a separate event, the LGBTQ+ summit “There’s More to Us."
That event drew a crowd of more than 150 people.
During the summit, District 4 Councilmember Mario Enríquez presented a proclamation honoring Transgender Day of Visibility, an annual event occurring every March 31 since 2009. The event is dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide.
“The city of Stockton is honored to issue an official proclamation recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility," Enríquez said. "Now more than ever, we must stand in solidarity with all communities, affirming our commitment to inclusion, equality, and respect for all. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community myself, I know firsthand that representation matters, and this proclamation is a meaningful step toward visibility and acceptance.”
In a statement issued after the event, university officials said, "The community successfully engaged in dialogue, and we are proud of our community and our students for tackling difficult issues."
