Maybe im a class 8 retard (I am) but my understanding of firearms is that you can use the serial number to trace its EXACT providence. was it defaced? My thinking is that leaving the firearm behind means a level of obfuscation has taken place that can usually only be attributed to state actors.

Like follow my logic, if its just some bada-bitch like you or me that buys a rifle legally, there will be documents, footage of the purchase, all that. They would find you before the end of the day if you left the rifle there

So its been this long and they dont even have a lead beyond grainy photos dosent that mean this rifle was acquired by more exotic means?

Btw have they published what the exact make and model of the weapon in question?

Some European countries rechambered captured German Mausers to 30-06 and later 7.62 NATO for their militaries after the war ended. As German Mausers and American ammo was plentiful, it was a quick and cost effective way to get the armies equipped. When the Mausers became obsolete, they were often just given away to people connected to the military or sold. You can still get old WW2 Mausers for 20$(sometimes free) from people cleaning out their recently deceased fathers old stuff here. So it could be a rechambered gun imported to the US.

Serial numbers have only been mandated since 1968. Only the receiver of the gun is is required to be serialized, and that receiver may have been manufactured in the 1930s. There is probably a stamped serial number, but depending on the last time the gun transacted, there may be no records that are retrievable. There's no "formal" ownership registry, and there's this whole thing with record retention on the surrender of an FFL.

That's not even accounting for a private sale/gifting/inheritance/theft, where there would be no record at all.

There was a press conference set for 1:45 central time. 22 minutes after announcing the press conference, there was a follow up announcing that it has been postponed due to "rapid developments" in the case.
