As long as the annoying British FTM tranny who was Paladin Mike in Wonderlands and that annoying cunt on the one planet in B3 isn't in B4, I will pick it up when the complete edition goes below $30 CDN, as is tradition.

I enjoyed the gunplay of BL3 and the planets. But the villains were so insufferable. But i feel they were designed that way to mock social media influencers.
The problem is that the execution is so Reddit-inspired that it's totally unfunny and makes the villains, who are actually a universal extinction-level threat come off as just being an annoying pair of douchebags instead of a real threat.

It's like they were a cargo-cult Handsome Jack written by someone who totally missed how dangerous Jack came off when the humor is peeled back and just doubled down on the obnoxiousness. When Jack would laugh about how he had everyone in a town executed because he was annoyed by them, it was actually a bit chilling. When the Calypso Twins blather about torturing someone, it is just more annoying babble.

Yeah what made Jack great was he was pretty balanced in being both comedic and threatening, and had memorable dialogue. Calypsos had none of that, and were written by speds who think "shit farming" is the apex of comedy.

It's interesting how Jack was just a normal guy while the Calypsos were Sirens, yet they felt so much less threatening.

Also doesn't help that the Calypsos had entire plotlines cut. IIRC the whole ending was mangled from what they originally planned. And then there was the Troy getting fed up with Tyreen thing which was literally just dropped immediately.

Thinking further, the biggest issue with the Calypsos is that they are ALWAYS "ON". They never drop their public persona or have the mask crack like Jack did. Having their direct communications to you be more like real people and their broadcast stuff being in-character for their audience would have improved things a lot.

When Jack would show annoyance and anger, it came off as genuinely disturbed and contrasted well with his "Aw, fuck it all, life is a joke" front.

I always tuned out (that can be said about most of the game) everytime the Calypsos showed up. Yelling at a camera and being full blown obnoxious is not how you write a character(s)

I dont even remember most of the side quests either. The only one i liked was the one with Moderci going to the birthday party of his apprentice only to find out she died a few days ago.
that one was actually rather dark and sad. SINCERITY? IN MY BORDERLANDS GAME!?

After having to do so to get through Wonderlands, I tuned out all the story and character stuff in B3 as much as possible, but the Calypsos are so fucking loud and excessively verbose that it is not easily done.

At least, unlike Paladin Mike, their faces didn't actually make me nauseous when they came on-screen.

Decided to check up on BL3 for fun since I've beaten the story and I was playing the circles of slaughter since the gunplay is essentially the only thing worth it in the game. I looked into the "Vault Cards" and saw an item called the "Shlooter". It's probably the most broken non-build specific relic. 1000% chance to drop legendaries for every kill in a 12 second period after killing an enemy.

Didn't this game already drop way more legendaries than the previous ones?

Yes and that was one of the game's big problems, legendaries pretty much meant nothing.

Also, once you get a few specific really good weapons (OPQ, Yellowcake etc) the game basically plays itself and it is pointless to ever use anything else.

I'd still take that over the "No legendaries on your first playthrough" bullshit they pulled in B2.

The game even gives you a weapon that shits out legendaries if you have enough eridum.

Turn on cheat mode and give yourself infinite eridum and you set for life. Im playing pirate version so i have no access to vault cards or mails so i have to get gear somehow lol. Thats what you get for trying to turn the game into a life-service game.

Borderlands 4 writers say the previous game "sometimes felt like parody," and while there's at least one meme in the new loot shooter "it does not involve a Skibidi Toilet"

There you have it folks, there will only be one meme and no more toilet humor, its now safe to preorder :story:

Handsome Jack is just a hard villain to top overall within the Borderlands universe. He is an unusually charismatic dickhead that blends the dark humor and environment. To me, the best content in BL3 is the Handsome Jackpot DLC, if for no other reason then getting Timothy Lawrence is just as good (if not better in some ways) as getting Jack back. I didn't completely hate Digsby Vermouth either. I feel like BL2 and 3 lost a lot of the "soul" that the first game had. Even though the gameplay mechanics themselves improved over the franchise, the Mad Max wasteland with an appropriate coat of gallows humor of the first is something that Gearbox never quite captured again. The humor worked because it was eccentric and crude without being overly campy.

What they did to Tiny Tina in BL3 (and by extension the film) was an absolute waste of a character. Tiny Tina works in BL2 because she's a traumatized child who watched bandits slaughter her parents. Instead of clamming up and shutting down, she instead opted for revenge as a coping mechanism. Her inventions and tools make sense because they're a blend of childlike whimsy and vengeful cruelty. When she appears in BL3, it would have been nice to see her as more level-headed while still being cold with a dark sense of humor. Instead, they doubled down on memes and loud=funny humor. The movie fucks it up even further by completely changing his origin story to her being a living Vault key because... reasons, I guess?

I recently played through BL 3 again in anticipation to BL 4.
The story was still shit and badly written.
But what annoyed me the most was waiting ALL THE FUCKING TIME for the self indulgent NPC chatter to stop in order to advance your quest.
In the older entries you could run towards your next objective because it popped up instantly, and in 3 you just stand there and wait for unfunny NPCs to finish their drivel.
I really hope they drop this garbage design in 4.
And sometimes, when you think you know where to go next, the game insists to "talk to the NPC again" for the quest to continue. Infuriating padding of playtime.
The gameplay was still fun though, firing wacky guns feels good.
They should focus on that, and not marvel meme plot writing :optimistic:

still feel theres some B3 aftermath where the game is shit, but im feeling optimistic.
the game has been shit ever since they toned down the celshading.
but seeing how well they assimilated the saints woke and destiny 2 people i can see the game being really nice to play and shoot, it'll probably have some gay anticheat because you can't cheat on singleplayer anymore, unless you buy the 0.99 cents cheat consumables...

Honestly i never cared for the story in a borderlands game, the closest i got to caring was with Handsome Jack. Always been about the gunplay and the wacky guns and builds you can come up with. Im still on the fence about the end game, regarding how gear wont be different from OP1 to OP5 but i hope we get a way to improve them. Honestly im liking the QoL things they added....even though those should have been in B3.

after you talk to any npc save quit and you won't have to hear the dialogue
