MLP was popular for obvious reasons:
It was well made, colorful, the songs were catchy, the characters were likable... and also, a lot of 40 year old men wanted to fuck those horses.
 
Tragically, as much as it would delight me to believe otherwise, all evidence points to furries not being a psyop. I watched this particular cancer grow in real time on /co/, and the site as a whole has never really recovered.
 
I don’t know about CIA involvement in MLP shilling and creating Bronies. However, bronies were ground zero for a lot of transgender-related bullshit now. Bronies were praised by feminists and journalists for challenging gender norms. Too quote Australian Bronies. Being a Brony is just like being black or gay.

I'm going to bring this one up until I die but - in a truly mind boggling twist - the fandom of a TV show for little girls has a massive chud population. Much higher than any other "regular" franchise except maybe Warhammer.
 
To me its not even really that surprising. Men like cute things--if they didn't, they would yeet babies, puppies, and kittens out the window at the earliest opportunity.

In some countries this was basically understood for decades. Like I don't see anyone calling Touhou or Puyo Puyo a psyop.

The really cringe part is when it becomes sexual. Men laughing at the antics of the stupid horses is one thing. Men wanting to get physical with them is an argument for chemical castration.
 
I was witness tot he OG 4chan threads that were just shitposting. Unless it's changed, general concensus is reddit and tumblr types latched onto it after meme compilations of the wacky shit said in those threads started circulating on youtube and shit and then it became the cancer of all cancers. Wouldn't put it past the 3 letter agencies to artificially astroturf inflate it.

Unrelated to anything you're saying but this reminds me of a time my mom was helping me babysit my sister's kid, who liked MLP, and it was one of those episodes that had a guy pony.

And my mom was just so astonished. She was like, "wait... that pony's a boy?" Like the concept there could be male ponies was mind-boggling.

(to be fair, my mom is the kind of person who doesn't think too deeply about shows or any deeper world implications. To her, "its just a cartoon" and she was used to girls cartoons being places where men were rare).

Chris being a brony before the term was even coined kind of seals it for me that it was organic in origin. He was the canary in the coal mine for bronydom. I think he may have been a fan even before he met Megan like 20 or so years ago.

He was also doing proto-tranny shit in 2010 with the tomgirl thing but that’s probably beyond the scope of this topic
 
A few people in my friend group became bronies, not insufferably so but they just had little sisters and they found it actually tolerable unlike the previous versions of MLP. I'm pretty sure that's the "vector" of the infection, even if there were/are bronies who were only children.
